Beating French Gendarme lame as India

Just finished a game against a French player as India. His teammates resigned pretty quick so we were able to beat his mass with lots of dragoons and halbs, but his cur spam tore through my Sepoys and Zambs. Whats the best unit comp to beat pure gendarme?

Carded zambs and then just kite him to death.

Howdahs are worse in treaty if i recall, they take too much population to be effective. Zambs are 1 pop goons so they counter gendames quite nicely.

Convention when I played treaty was that elephants >>>> camels, don't even bother upgrading camels let alone keeping the upgrade cards in deck.
France is unbeatable as India anyway.

Also bc imo camels get smashed by cuir splash dmage, while howdahs are quite big and don't take too much damage from it if i were to guess

If french really just spams gendarmes just go sepoy/howdah. If French also uses other units like skirms, then good night you have no chance.

In the case of pure gend you can even mix in some rajput I guess or however they are called.

How is everybody complaining about Cuirs but whenever i get imperial gendarmes with 1150 hp all upgrades, opponnents have ports and 20 range goons? :(

A good French player is going to make skirms (strongest in the game) and artillery (also strongest in the game) to support his gendarmes, which train instantly and trade well against goons if they get into hand combat. Also remember that France has a better eco than you while also having 20 more pop space.

So just to summarize: op eco, op cavalry, op infantry, op artillery. There’s a reason France is consistently ranked no. 1 in treaty civ rankings.

Tbh I would go with Sepoys and Zams, but the trick is to minimise the Gendarmes splash damage. So rather than having one big block of Zams and sepoys, split them up into smaller groups to surround the gendarmes. It’s a pain but it’s a way to make sure the balance is tipped less in the Frenchies favour.

Also a couple of Howdahs is always a good idea, just cos they can take the beating for the other units lol

This is an uphill fight for india with such slow train times. You are going to need to fur trade a little early so you can gather more food prior to end of 40, then delete down 20 vils. For late game battles as india vs france you want to mass sepoy, and put in melee, and add a 6-8 howdas. I don't know of any matchups where going camels is preferable to elephants in NR. They are only good for age 2/3 battles.

If the france player was greedy for a high fur trade then this will drain his food much faster. india can last a long time just making sepoy and protecting the howdas.
