Using MM for treasure hunting
Does anyone do this? I was thinking it would be a good idea on heavy treasure maps during the colonial or fortress age.

No.
In colonial/fortress, you just use your units. If you have 1 HP minutemen, of course you can use them for that but don't call them just for that.

I've seen lts do this in tr on deccan before. It's bad.

I could see that being okish in treaty because you're not going to train units while in 1v1 you have to, and also in treaty it's "just" 300 resources while in sup it's 300 resources + you waste the mm.
I don't know what the treasures are on Deccan but if you get 5% training time on cav or 5% HP it would be totally worth it.

I've seen Japan sending mountain warrior, and call 4 irregular for treasure hunting. It should work in theory.

Explorer card on maps like Yukon isn't even bad. You can take all the big treasures and deny TP line because you hard win explorer fights. Good as Spain and Ports for sure, maybe Russia and Japan too.
Calling MM, I dunno. The only time it makes sense to do is in transition to 2, because as Rouga said you have an army to help you hunt after that. If you're calling the MM you lose a lot of potential opportunities in transition to get TPs/market ups, which unless you get some crazy treasures probably isn't worth the 300 resources plus losing the opportunity to call MM later.

Spain doesn't need explorer card to win fights, and they would much rather send 3v. The others do check out. 6 pop and 300res and avoid enemy heroes that can 1 shot them, sounds good, go for it

Yea, the only treasures whose payoff would make the minutemen investment worth on deccan are pop cap increase and 10% inf.
