Well, I just watched through last week's official AoE stream and I get the feeling that they've pretty much confirmed ESO is not going to be a thing on AoE3:DE. It was mentioned multiple times throughout the stream that the aim of DEs is to unify all Age of Empires games under the Xbox platform and bring the community together. Anything is still possible, but I don't have high hopes that ESO can be twisted to fit into this plan.

Another interesting thing I caught is that they openly said they have "no plans" for Steam and will offer all the new games exclusively on Windows Store. Existing AoE games on Steam are still supported for now and "won't be pulled off Steam or anything". This makes me think that perhaps they won't even shut down AoE2:HD Steam servers nor ESO and just let those run separately from the new DEs? Especially for AoE2:HD it might be seen like an evil move if MS shuts down servers for such a recently released game, so it makes sense in a way. What do you think?

Bruce Shelley recalls a dozen different versions of the big new feature, home cities, which were intended as a kind of meta game. But Tony Goodman doesn't think the feature ever fully worked. "The home city worked more like a big menu," he said. "And the gameplay on it I thought was—it was a good attempt on our designers' part, but it's never anything that I personally was able to connect with."

Amazing how it ended up working out. Its a shame many people didnt last to experience the depth of aoe3

While this article does kind of nicely explain the history of current Age games, I should note for potential readers that there's no mention of AoE3:DE whatsoever there, nor any new information about other Age stuff in development.

I didn't know where to post it.

They do talk about the definitive edition though:

With a new Age game in development and a "definitive edition" reboot of the original just around the corner—and given our recent foray into the evolution of the entire real-time strategy genre—we thought it'd be interesting to dig into the history of this RTS series. After all, RTS games like Age have introduced millions of impressionable youths to the delights of... well, history.

They just don't really bring any news about it, I agree. So, not sure what prompted them to bring up the subject. It's still good that a major tech media outlet had this as their top subject today.

This should be relevant to the Definitive Editions. Crossplatform play with Steam versions!

Indeed, possibly the first good news I've heard about the DEs. Should've probably linked the OP instead of my post there, I'll paste the original quote here:
Adam Isgreen wrote:We’re not leaving Age of Empires fans on Steam behind – we plan to release new content and features – like cross-network play – to let Steam players come along on the Age of Empires journey with us.

It's fairly vague, but certainly sounds like a good thing, whatever it is.

Cross play for aoe3 at least doesn't really make sense, no? To play together with a DE version and regular TAD they'd need to push a new TAD patch out which seems incredibly unlikely.

Since they redo the whole game for DE, why is it unlikely to make a Steam patch too? I mean, in order to make the DE they need to break down the AoE3 code anyway.

If they push a patch for AoE3 I wonder why you would even buy the DE. But I guess that's good news for us, if normal AoE3 gets updated we don't have 3 kinds of players (RE, EP and DE) but just 1, the DE.

I seriously doubt they would update the RE patch, all efforts would be on DE.

A patch for Steam AoE3 wouldn't turn it into a DE but only add the requirements for cross-play. Depending on what else they do in DE that would very likely stay exclusive. ;)

Indeed, it sounds like a good way to preserve an active online playerbase from existing AoE2:HD and AoE3. Adam's quote suggests to me that this might be a feasible option. There's also even precedent for cross-play between Steam and Xbox Live in a much less active RTS title; Rise of Nations: Extended Edition.

Could be a lot harder to implement for AoE3 though, as it doesn't actually have "Steam" multiplayer.

I'm a bit suspicious if that's really going to happen, and if does, doesnt sound like good news to me.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but making DE compatible with current game, means that DE will be just a skin/texture/sound pack. They cant even fix the explorer revive bug, since thats in the current code of the game. Cant change the crappy 2005 p2p multiplayer, etc....

Yeah, I mean, I would have not even considered cross-play, but then Adam said it himself! They would have to push fixes like these to both versions.

Pretty sure p2p is going to stay either way.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

but if thats really their goal, all my hopes for aoe3de just went to zero.

We really didnt believe they would fix all the problems in DE, but now, fixing them 2 times in De + old version and making then run together? No way.

Probably will be the exact old game, with new assets/textures

Microshit doesn't care about this game. They tested the waters with unhyped announcements and one DE that is failing hard. AoE4 won't happen.

AoE4 will happen, but it will probably be a let down for many reasons
