Forgotten Empires is a design studio, they create new content but they don't make remasters on their own. The studio that handled the technical aspect of AoE2 HD and AoM EE is Skybox Labs, which doesn't have a very good reputation.

Now that you mentiton it the team has been increased recently, so my previous statement might not be entirely true.

Still, they worked with Skybox Labs for those two games as i said. I don't know if in the future they will always work alone.

Their team expanded ever since. I suppose they will create aoe 3 de. They should get help imao or give it to a different company.

Is there any documentation for AOE3 asset file formats (how to unpack, binary file headers, etc)? I'd love to make an open-source version of the game with the improvements mentioned in this thread.

No, all open source versions of games require the game's original assets. The code is open source, but you have to point to the original game's directory.
