We should get crazy with maps
Re: We should get crazy with maps
No one knows. After 11 years this game still remains significantly unexplored. AoE3 is the chess (Yes, GoodSpeed. Chess.) of RTS. <3
Pay more attention to detail.

Re: We should get crazy with maps
These maps should not be in the random maps set (so we'd need a competitive set), cause obviously if you're brits or whatever against japan on a map without hunts it's really gonna be a waste of time. And in tourney you can maybe have 1 of these maps per round, while others should be regular maps. And/or have a minor tourney with only these maps.
With these conditions respected, I think it could be a really good and funny idea
It depends on what kind of non standard map it is. For example a map without hunts would be way easier to balance than regular maps, since hunts are usually what causes most problems on maps I think. No gold should also make it a bit easier I guess. All res in the middle as well. Honestly everything listed by gs sounds easy to balance, but then some other kind of non standard maps might be harder.

Re: We should get crazy with maps
I think they'd be cool to have, but agree they should be relegated to a second-tier status. It's a fun feature and cool to have, but some people like to play a standard competitive game. Since such things are unexplored, they are also undoubtedly unbalanced, and not really appropriate for first-tier competitive play.
Having "alternative" tournaments on such maps, perhaps similar to the weekend tournaments, would be cool though.

Re: We should get crazy with maps
Yeah got to find the good format, but I think it would be great to have the opportunity to play on a map pool with crazier layout/resources repartition. It could bring some intersting ideas for balance changes and entertaining games to watch
Re: We should get crazy with maps
You start the game with your villagers but also one falconet. Go
replace hunts with sheep
real island maps
trade posts and wood crates instead of coin mines

Re: We should get crazy with maps
I've had my fair share of crazy map ideas. Here's the ones I actually made.
Red River - two Cree tps beside each players base for extra booming options https://eso-community.net/viewtopic.php?p=194944#p194944
Dead Marsh - only berries and you start with an outpost wagon https://eso-community.net/viewtopic.php?p=199810#p199810
Nunavut - single tp trade routes to discourage stagecoach https://eso-community.net/viewtopic.php?p=284823#p284823
Gulfs - starting crate of xp allows for 2 discovery age shipments https://eso-community.net/viewtopic.php?p=292150#p292150

Re: We should get crazy with maps
There are a lot of funny maps in aoe2 and its always cool to play / see something new (the reason why i sometimes watch aoe2 videos instead of the round of 64). I think it should be possible to copy a lot of these maps like "forest nothing" (There is already one out there but it could be improved) or maps where you start with something else than a TC could be fun.
I think a Scenario / Fun-Maps folder like "Team Maps" should have been there a long time ago with all the maps meantioned earlier in this thread.
Could maybe do a small tourney with these fun maps or Scenarios only to promote them

Re: We should get crazy with maps
Yes please.
I also like the idea of maps where you "start with something", RE also likes that aparently (texas, sib, seguenay, deccan, yellow river, hisp, indochina ....) meanwhile, EP maps dont really use this feature (only indonesia?). We could try implementing a few of them in new maps (or maybe existing but not popular maps) and let people explore for a while before deciding to usem them in tournaments.
Some other ideas are starting with +x amount of vills (lotv), or with a dock wagon, or with x fishing boats, with 200exp crates, maybe a map with very little food avaiable and a starting farm, deccan style starting crates..
There are quite a few interesting possibilities to explore, and imo this "post main event" time is the best time to explore and refresh the game. (same thing as starcraft 2 also does)

I really like the idea of starting with a shipment available (or some XP crates), would be interesting to see what people do with it.
A map with a second explorer perhaps

Indonesia and Florida. Indonesia gives a free catamaran, free saloon and 1 or 2 extra crates of coin. Florida gives a free market.

Re: We should get crazy with maps
Settler Massacre! You start with just a TC and standard vills/crates on an empty map and have to build up your eco using shipments (e.g. shipping 300w then building a farm; shipping bison; shipping a mango grove then chopping for a rice paddy)
I've done some research on this gamemode and it's quite interesting; build orders and strategies are completely different. Civs like Sioux, Japan, Dutch, Aztec, Iro are strong on this map, whereas most Euro civs are weak.
