Question about selecting units

Post by SNake38 »

Hello,

Sometimes i select a lot of military units and i select, unintentionally, some settlers who hided in my troups.

I would like to know if there is a fast way to just unselect the settlers ? Or just select gendarmes here.
Imagine like 20 gendarmes scattered in my fulled mills, that is my common issue.
Without using Ctrl+X please !

Thanks !

There is an option along the lines of 'dragboxing selects military units only' called easy drag military units. That way you never select any villagers at all as long as there are military units in the dragbox.

Otherwise, you can use shift-click on the villager to deselect that unit, or use ctrl-click on the gendarmes to only select that unit. The former is of course better if you are having multiple military units in one selection.

It's worth going through all the game settings to see which ones work for you. Holding your mouse on each of them also displays additional information.

Note that this works the opposite way if you have easy drag military enabled, meaning it is always useful.

Iirc it bugs 90% of the time. When I press alt the drag select sticks, so I have to click again to let the drag box go. Don't know if it happens to everyone.

Actually that does happen to me as well, ha, thought it's just me. Very annoying indeed.

I always assumed I was messing up the fucking hotkeys. It bugged more often than not so I ended up enabling easy drag military anyway. No regrets.

I believe you can also control or shift click on the unit portrait in the selection to either select or remove those units. I just don't know which is which. Actually I believe there's an option "invert control/shift functionality" that specifically refers to this and reverses which one is used for what. You would need to test this, as I am not quite sure. But basically for example holding shift and clicking on the CDB icon in this case will remove them from the selection and leave you with only the gendarmes. Or, holding control and clicking on the gendarme icon will select only those gendarmes. Disabling/Enabling (I don't know what the default behaviour is, you would need to test this) invert control/shift functionality would then make control remove and shift select the specific unit type. This also works with multiple unit types. I've never managed to actually incorporate this trick in my gameplay though, as I always get it mixed up.

alt+dragbox bugs out if your box exceeds the window.
ctrl+click on the unit icons selects those units.

Btw I don't think that's a good settup to have this "select only millitary unit when dragboxing". I used to do it but now I do as garja said and I think it's a lot better. I see all the time @Guigs struggling to select his villager on his stream when there is millitary unit mixed. I think you should changé this.
PS : It's also impossible to do the wp boom as aztec with it since you won't be able to remove your villager from the firepit.
