How to improve skills for Beginners?

Post by DS_Freeze »

I wonder how can a beginner improve his skill more effectively with a new account of ESO (homecity lvl is only 10, but I don’t want to use other ways like exp patch to accelerate). I have played online for a few games and don’t get that much improvement. I have a playmate at the same level with me and we battle sometimes, but still I find that my skill is not improving obviously. Is there any recommendations for a specific civ or strategy?

Since you don't want to use the xpmod to boost your home city levels, following guides aren't going to be super helpful for you since you won't have access to all the cards needed. Why are you so hesitant to use the mod?

Do you use hotkeys? If not, start implementing them into your play.

Queuing vills is often something that beginners forget to do. Your TC shouldn't ever be idle (unless you're intentionally cutting vills, but that is a specific circumstance). Set a waypoint from your TC to a resource so that you don't have so much idle vill time. Keep track of your resources. Throw down buildings once you can afford them, get eco upgrades from the market when you can, queue military when you can, and constantly be making vills.
Time is wise and our wounds seem to heal to the rhythm of aging,
But our past is a ghost fading out that at night it’s still haunting.

Yeah thanks for the advice. I somehow enjoy the process of lvl up my homecity so I am not that fond of xpmod, though I am aware that some vital cards are not available like 2.35 wood stream or OHR. I am at corporal-sergeant rank now and I actually use civ randomly. Those basic skills I do use them, but I’m sort of confused about what civ or style or strategy that fits me more.

Game settings (very far zoom, "find" button does not center camera on unit, show gathered per resource, show training queue, etc), 3-4 hotkeys (TC, vill, house, attack move), 2-3 control groups (units, military building), making villagers continuously, herding, sending high value shipments (not even tight build orders or timing based gameplay, just cards that make sense like wood crates and villagers), building a market in transition, spending your resources, knowledge of the counter system, having half a mind about where your army is and what it's doing

Just play. I wish I would've spent more time playing when I had the time instead of looking up guides and build orders.

Agreed. Guides are pretty much useless, youre better of just playing and watching some streams to see what they do.

You should use the xpmod and not feel bad about it at all. You are not going to look back and be happy enough about grinding the levels vs missing several hundred games where you could actually learn and improve and explore the game.

It is up to you but thought I would give you a voice of someone who played this game for a long time (before xpmod even existed).

Failure to follow this advice will have you end your AoE3 career on Deccan with the rest of us imbeciles.

you need to get used on the game's mechanics and your hotkeys first, then focus on improving your strategy and tactics. Record games you play and watch them, see what you could have done different for a better outcome.

I for one, was able to rank up from "absolutely trash" to rank "lowbob" within 2 weeks after reading Hazza's spanish team guide.

Some people learn better from watching, others prefer something thats written up cause otherwise they might not notice some things while watching a better player.

Try both for yourself and see what works better for you, often its a mix of both.

And do the XP mod, it saves you lots of time.

Some of the tutorials further down on this playlist are helpful to beginners. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P ... fmzqnKsF46

And this one: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P ... _AmGLy-OmL

Iirc, there was a youtube channel by harcha or something like that that I watched early on that was helpful.
