Hey all,

Currently, Age of Empires 3 has a selection limit of 50 units. Let's assume that EP (or Microsoft or someone else) could remove that limit, do you think that should be done?

Does the selection limit provide a strategic element to the game, or is it a dumb and arbitrary limitation? Would like to hear your thoughts.

Once again, this is not polled for the ESOC Patch but out of interest.

It is probably too big to really matter, but if you increased it who knows how broken formations would become.

No I don't think you should touch fundamental things like this. The selection limit actually puts a boundary on the pull-trick, otherwise you'd be able to pull 40 skirms with 45 ruyter for example.

It's not really explaining why it's good for the gameplay. Why is 50 a good number and not 20 or 80?

At this point, everyone is used to the number being 50, so you'd need a very good reason to change it, even if you were to somehow conclude 45 is slightly superior.
As to why not remove it entirely, the reason I heard of was discouraging one-unit compositions, which is healthy for the gameplay. Basically if you have over 50 units you will have a better time managing them when they're different kinds of units.

One of the things I don't like about this game. I always end up having like 55 units but have to put the other 5 in a group as well. Aoeo didn't have that and it felt good.

No reason to keep a limit which is annoying since 2005 and does not really exist in most games. As long as formation-building would not bug, I think it is an awesome idea. The "you have 4 skirms too many for this control group" is just cancer.

The same with maps with larger pop limits. I would like to see a concept map with 250 or 300 pop.

The main time this is annoying is when I play Russia and am spamming strellets. I can have 50 Gendarmes in a control group but not 51 strellets? It is very easy as russia to go over this limit.

I would be interested in seeing it pop based at say 80ish population

Being able to use multiple control group is a skill, I don't see the problem with that. Removing the selection limit would just make the game even easier. Tbh having more than 50 units with one same group sounds awful anyway, even with 40-50 units we should probs split into 2 control groups just to get better pathing, just no one doing that cause lazy

the "all military to rally point" hotkey is the solution to people mad that their 5 strelets get left out, just make sure it doesnt pull your nat scout away from his hiding spot

As far as I can tell, it has nothing to do with strategy. It's a matter of mechanics. This is the sort of thing popularity shouldn't decide, unless there is near consensus.

You obviously dont understand that 4 idle skirms measn 4x mini raids.
