i would expect most players that play on a regular basis to buy the DE and for those that dont they will probably get replaced by the new / old players the DE is gonna bring back, so no, it wont be a problem

As long as De is actually good you are right. recent news on aoe2de are optimist, but if you take AomEE as reference, they just broke everything and droped the game. original aom is 10x better. if they did similar to aoe3 and droped old servers, it would be a problem.
