So Diarouga and I are 1 - 1 in BO5s. When do we do the final BO5 to finally crown a true champion? :uglylol:

I took it for granted that even if some players couldn't prepare before LAN, they sure were cautious to be well-rested and spent some time preparing during it. Now it seems that suddenly no-one took this tournament seriously. welp

So anyway... if the results are bollocks, can we have another anonymous seeding by the top 8 players after their tournament experience instead?

Is it not understandable though? This maybe the only time they see each other out of an online setting, surely going out is the correct thing to do?

It would just never occur to me that it can be approached differently than how diarouga did it.

Maybe you're not the type to socialise then.

against kickass, I haven't not time to play, but in free time I could see streams and prepare myself in another way..

Even if Hazza says that Prince, Snowww, and himself didn't really care about winning, that doesn't mean they wanted to lose. We're all pretty competitive people, and I don't think we would've made it here if we were not.

You have to remember that pretty much every player in the top 8 (to my knowledge, anyway), has a full-time job or is a full-time student, and sometimes has other obligations in addition to that. That and the timezone differences (especially for me) often makes it hard to find games that feel worthwhile during--or in this case, before--a tournament. I personally found it very difficult to prepare anything when I'm pretty busy IRL already, and the best games I can usually find in the evenings in North America are often vs majors and not very high quality, and I imagine other players have similar experiences.

And it is true that this was potentially a once-in-a-lifetime chance to finally meet everyone and get to know the real person behind the username.

Still, I wouldn't say that no one took it seriously. During the tournament the practice computers were pretty much being used by the players 100% of the time to practice and warmup before games. If there had been more computers available I'm sure that they would've also been used nearly 100% of the time and players would've been more prepared overall, but we worked with what we had. To be honest a lot of the time when I wanted to play I also didn't want to hog the computers, so I socialized instead, and I definitely don't regret it.

Besides, I think that this LAN produced some of the highest quality games AoE3 has seen in a very long time. So much of the gameplay was just much higher level than anything we've seen in the ESOC tournaments--much of it being enabled by a mostly lag-free environment, but also just the confidence of the players to be able to execute a lot of these things even with the little practice they were able to get in before and during the LAN.

Anyway, this post is getting a little long-winded and I've spent long enough writing it, I think. The point is that I think myself and the rest of the players took it about as seriously as we were able to during the LAN, while still making the most of finally getting to meet some of our closest friends in person for the first time. Could the tournament games have been a little bit more competitive if we practiced more? Maybe. Probably. But if nothing else I can guarantee that while on stage we were giving it our all.

And that might've meant that some of us were also trying to be a little bit too fancy in game and losing spectacularly as a result!

Thank you for your lengthy response @Mitoe . I really appreciate it. Maybe I got a bit overinvested. I considered the event very special and watched every single game over the last couple of days after all, and really rooted for everyone involved. If not for a want of necessary financial means, I would have appeared in person.
Investment turned to burnout after I had learned about a behind the scenes happened to me once before---with a football World Cup (haven't watched the sport since). So... while I will take a break now, thanks to your clarification I will probably come back at some point.

Stop dreaming. Just as lightning does not fall in the same place, you would never win me a new one, that's a fact. You could spend the rest of the decade training.

Yea. I went to bed at 2 am and I was already drunk. Going to bed at 6 am would have been too much for me.
As people said, you have to make choices, prepare for your tournament games or socialize, and that's not an easy one. Tournament games are very different from random games, I really feel like the confidence, the preparation before the games and the mood are more important than your "usual" skill level.

Unsure why this is even a debate. They made the most of the time together in a once in a lifetime opportunity. They all did, including diarouga. He just went home at 2am instead of 6am. He didn't dog the boys. And the others didnt intentionally lose. They gave it their best shot.

In my experience going to sports tournaments, traveling around the country ww would meet up with other clubs out the night before. We'd go out till 1 or 2am drinking and then be fighting at 8 30am that day. The adrenaline takes over. And this is for a full contact sport where we are fighting for up to 5 min at a time, not sitting down. I'd say unless they were still actually drunk then it wouldnt have made much of a difference. Plenty of water seemed to be had

my toughts after watching the tournament:
I think it was clear at the start who the most prepared players were and those were @tabben and @Diarouga So even tough i expected it would still be tough cuz raph and kaiser are very good and probably the highest skilled players there in my opinion i predicted one of the 2 was gonna win.

A lan is something else then an online match and this was a very unique experience for those who were there so i understand that most took the time to socialize with other players and people who love aoe 3.

I think that is main reason @Kaiserklein and @lordraphael underperformed in the later stages of the tournament. The 2 best players at that lan and who put winning and preperation before socializing were tabben and diarouga and they proved that by beating everyone else in the tourney( i know diarouga lost vs mitoe earlier but i think that was more bit of nerves but could be wrong). The series between tabben and diarouga was one of the best series i have ever seen in aoe 3 actually was trully amazing!

I still think tabben could have won the last game if he correctly identified that he was ahaed economically and dia had sent his last unit shipment in the iron troops. The last fight was i think perfect fight dia could have hoped for free hitting crow blocked by army and native settlement and trees and free hitting iron troops. there was no room for tabbens cav to try surround there so i think he made an error there wich cost him the game. This is my opinion and could be wrong just sharing it here so dont begin flaming me with ur pr 30+ knowledge :D also this was a really really tense game for the players i think so mistakes happen.

But i am a big fan of @tabben now cuz i think he played absolutely brilliant that series and also vs kaiser.

So i say congrats at @Diarouga !! u deserve to win but i hope u recognize that if ppl are evenly prepared and slept some more this could have ended very early for you so dont get cocky ;) cuz tabben is coming for u for sure XD

wish u all a good day

Just a question to all those who are commenting and my comment doesn't reflect my opinion of any player or about the issue nor does it belittle anyone. So the question is does this mean that preparation > raw talent/skill?

It triggers me that people seem to attribute this win to preparation. It's probably for the same reason diarouga was the #6 seed. He has been one of the best players for a while now and while a prepared raffle would probably do better than he did, how much better is a question mark and he still actually performed very well regardless. All the series were incredibly high level. Diarouga won because he's the best player right now (although possibly it's tabben, that semi was a nailbiter).

If iamgrunt was prepared for this LAN, he would've won. Same for H2O. Do we feel the need to express that? No because it's irrelevant. Of course you're not gonna be as good as the competition if you don't play the game as much as them.

I watched that China mirror again. He was definitely winning at this point, but that's because I threw my army a bit earlier.
Basically my initial pressure gave me a huge advantage but then I threw.

I do realize that tabben was very close to win this series, he was better prepared for it, and he's probably going to keep improving.

that my good sir is a very sportmanlike response and i congratulate u for that! And i agree with what u said that u threw ur advantage but also credit by tabben for defending well there were some games this tournament where ur enemy also threw their advantage but u also defended well so its bit of both ofcourse but very well played by both nonetheless!

I dont know how the atmosphere, partying or whatever and all that was, but I think its shitty to try to take away anything from dia, when he just won and did only what was under his control. And you know I'm not one to take his side, but the outcome shouldn't be cheapened by speculation.

At the end of the day the best player is the one who performs when there is high pressure and money on the line.

We saw lots of great games in the LAN setting and the play was high level :).
