Your first game online
Your first game online
When I first logged onto ESO, I had been playing AoE3 against the computer for 3-4 years, so I felt well-prepared for competitive online play. I joined a sergeant’s game on Amazonia playing as Brits with him as Spain. I ended up losing when he killed my trained caravel and spammed lancers into my eco from a galleon. Despite losing badly, I still remember the game fondly
Does anyone else remember their first game? Did you crash and burn, or did you pull of a victory?

Re: Your first game online
Probably wasn't the first game, but my first online memory is getting carried hard in a 2v2 by some guy spamming Gendarmes. I had absolutely zero notion of the counter system so I was making nothing but skirmishers as Germany because you can't go wrong with a civ's basic gunpowder unit, right? I eventually managed to mass a full dragbox of them by what must've been 50 minutes or so while my teammate was holding both enemies off with nothing but that OP French cav. He also taught me the lesson that you should always be training vills. He seemed like a god at the time, realistically I think he would've been a serg or something.
EDIT: Dug it up out of curiosity. Was more like my 20-somethingth game. Thanks hawkxing

@Papist I recently learned from @evilcheadar that you are the reason he found ESOC and started trolling here, which is what led me to do the same and eventually led me to travelling overseas to go to the LAN tournament, so thanks for that.

Re: Your first game online
My first ever game online was on Auracania as Iroquois vs France. I aged with the single mantlet (LOL) plus travois, big button tomas and 6 toma (maybe it was 5- i had a level 10HC) shipment escorted the travois forward, dropped a war hut to find my opponent walling up already. He resigned the moment the first torch hit the wall. That first win left me with a taste of victory and set me up for a whole spree of very bad iro laming before i discovered russia, sioux, aztec and china... fond memories

Did you win new civs and maps?

Can't remember what civ I was, but I distinctly remember being attacked by some cheater playing Spain at 15 minutes with 20 pikemen on Araucania. Wise older brother elifent told me "yes, well usually the people who play online are pros".

Fine line to something great is a strange change.
Re: Your first game online
I had only been playing the game for about a week or so before I tried playing online. I had yet to win a single game vs the moderate AI, and had given up on the campaign because I couldn’t beat one of the levels. So, I decided to try playing online.
The first thing I was asked upon joining a GameRanger lobby was whether or not I was new to the game, followed by whether or not I had ever beaten the expert AI. I dodged the question by saying I had never tried.
There was another new player in the room so they decided they’d team us 2 noobs up with the most experienced player and give us 20% handicaps. The game was on Hispaniola and I was (of course) playing Germany. I remember splitting up my villagers evenly between food, wood, and gold, and getting told to focus on aging as fast as possible. Despite this sound, high level advice we got completely and utterly destroyed in about 10 minutes, and was subsequently kicked from the lobby. Good times, haha

Re: Your first game online
I started as a treaty player. Back on Mac GR we played the better time control of "nr 30" always on Carolina. Luckily a treaty pro by the name of DanBob showed me the ropes of how to make 3 layers of walls and spam cuirs. He invited me into my first ever clan, "BobsBrigade." It gets hazy after that. Somehow I improved in supremacy but no idea how.
Re: Your first game online
I also remember getting completely facerolled by @shapeshifter (and later @iCourt) a few times when I was new to the game and couldn’t even comprehend how I could possibly come close to beating him. Shortly thereafter I founded the {PHX} clan with a guy named Creole and eventually formed a rivalry with CotF (@deleted_user4) that would shake the foundations of the Mac GameRanger TAD community! Too much nostalgia now.

The most unbeatable strat I ever faced was faith clan's mr. love's French xbow pike mass. He was on another level compared to me.
All those years playing mediocre competition on Mac GR made me start as a 1st lt when I came to ESO several years of inactivity later. My only hotkeys were T and V.

Re: Your first game online
I was quite excited to play my first online game. I picked Portuguese, they were my favourite civ. It was a 4v4 ( ) on Bayou. There was a lot of lag since the start and some players of the other team lost their connection. The game ended after 6 minutes and this way I happened to be in the winning team

Re: Your first game online
I'm more clear on my first Age of Mythology game, which is my first ever online game.
I was a sophomore in high school and a year earlier a friend gave me the aom vanilla discs and said I should play. I didnt. This time he gave me AOT and said he made an account for me and to log in with a certain password and we'll play after school. So that day I got home and logged into MatRz101 (I think) and he hosted a game. We played the map Alfheim. He crushed me in a 1v1, since I had never played.
I played just to one game and got off. Some time in the next few months I got curious and picked up the game, and eventually got hooked. Looking back, I guess I only played from like 2003 to aoe3 release, but it felt much longer. With some past LAN AOC experience with brothers and neighbors, I reached top 500, maybe even top 300, before aoe3 came out, which seems quick thinking about it now.
I dont know if it is my first game on aoe3, but this one game is stuck in my head for awhile, so maybe it is.
It was a 1v1 on Yukon. It was a German mirror vs Skwizz Amasis, who was an aot expert that I was a big fan of because his Odin raiding in aom. We both made the 300w stables and spammed uhlan. I believe I lost as I was running out of food and getting cav caught.

Great Plains, me brit, opponent russia, I lost...good times
Re: Your first game online
some guy did that brit manor boom strat where you stay in age 1 for a long long time and spawn outposts and build atp trading posts on GP.
I played like 5 games vs this guy and said "yea not gonna play 1v1 ever again.
I used to play team and scenarios only because I didn't like x1. That was the last 1v1 games I played before quitting 1v1 for a while.

Re: Your first game online
Someone correct me if I am wrong;
Did Germany not have a 2 falc shipment in fortress when the game first came out?
I seem to remember sending 2 falcs right away and dragboxing everything across the map, it was a long time ago though.

Re: Your first game online
Ya they did and WW had 20 range, maybe 18. I remember falcs hiding in ww. This was also before the 1.5 damage from skirm nerf

Re: Your first game online
My first game on eso was vs a sioux player, i won the game with japan. I ended up making a bunch of samurais once i saw he made axe riders. they totally demolished his cav after i had about 20 of them vs double the amount of cav or so. he didnt destroy my shrines, so i stole his animals and i even destroyed his war hut and stole ~600 wood from his crates.
Re: Your first game online
My first game online wasn't even AOE. I think it was some kind of racing game, but it was very weird, it had huge maps that you traversed, passing through cities and mazes of complicated structures. Then at some point I randomly discovered an arcade, Tron-style game, I think it was called GLTron. Might have been this one:
https://youtu.be/WHEFU4QsoCs
It was pretty vapor.
I don't know how it happened, but I think I got sick sometimes around late 2010 and had to stay at home for a few days. I was so bored out of my wits, that I opened the laptop, fired up AOE3 and just decided to try PvP. ESO connection didn't work for me, so I installed Game Ranger and got in the first game as Brits. It was a chaotic 3v3 (or maybe 4v4, not sure) on Bayou in which nobody did anything that made sense. We were all spread around in that swamp, building honeycombs of walls on those cramped islets and trying to boom, each in his own walled up cell.
I don't even remember who won that game, but one of our teammates dropped at some point. And when we looked at his base, it was built like a fortress with wall layers, a fort in the middle, lots of xbow around it, all very carefully positioned and placed, like what the fuck, it was the exact definition of autism.

I don’t remember my first game. Was sometime back in 2006 - might have been vs my younger brother who got me back to the aoe series (I played aoe 1 when it was released with him on my lab). Would be fun to find that first matchup.
I do remember my first game on tad. Everyone was a conscript - and my opponent was Parfait. He had just come back from his second place at the wcg where he lost to Iamgrunt. He steamrolled me in the first game and was kind enough to play me for a second where the game was recorded - boy did I learn some things using japan.
Fun times
