The agile Coyote Runner is a unique class of unit that is able to fulfill the role of a cavalry at a lesser cost and effective against long-range infantry and artillery, but vulnerable to heavy infantry and ranged cavalry.

That agile Coyote Runner you refer too has a light infantry tag.

Longbows/skirmishers etc are just infantry.

and its cav type unit.
In Age of Empires III, all ranged infantry units that counter heavy infantry and light cavalry with their ranged attacks are considered light infantry.

Incorrect.

Light infantry applies to Coyoterunners, Eagle Knights, Rattan Shield type units. Don't believe me? Look inside the proto.xml file and read the games coding for yourself.

Skirmishers and the like are just infantry.

I call skirms/longbows/mace etc. either skirmies or medium infantry for clarity.

Light infantry- human cav
Ranged infantry- skirms
Heavy infantry- anticavalry infantry

To further add to the confusion: mantlets, arrow knights and minutemen have only the infantry tag as well, making them technically skirmisher units as far as counters are concerned.

The aoe3 wiki is smattered with confusing articles indiscriminately refering to skirmishers as light infantry, which is incorrect. Units like lancers and naginata do not hard counter coyote runners or eagle runners, despite the wiki insisting that they counter light infantry

And... TWC where coyotes were introduced and they were tagged as light infantry. Nice try on the save though. Was cute.

Yes. Light infantry on vanilla. Tags have changed several times over the years. Units lost or gained several tags.

However, when referencing coyotes and skirms (especially in the same post ^_^ ) it goes as follows.

Light Infantry: Coyote runners, Eagle Knight, Rattans
Infantry/Ranged infantry: Skirmishers, Longbows, Muskets etc

You'll notice muskets break this system. As they are heavy infantry and perform as such. I'm just telling you what the tags are. I'm not trying to argue they are great tags or easily understandable to newcomers. But it is what it is. The code doesn't lie.

If I ran the zoo I'd change the tagging system to be more clear.

Tiger claws are light infantry too, but also infantry. Native scouts (which act like a light infantry unit once "advanced scout" is sent are just infantry
Disciples are light infantry

Its all super logical. My favorite part is that skirms do 0.75 to coyoteman tag but not lightinfantry tag, which would be simpler and more logical

Isn't that because they'd also do less damage to ERKs?

But most skirms do 0.75vs cav, 2x vs light cav for 1.5x. Erks is just 2x.

Skirmishers dont need their own tag since until TAD came out, nothing countered skirms as an individual unit, but then (deep breath) Tiger Claws, Steppe, Naginata, Mahout, Sowar, Iron Flails, all came along and ruined everything and the devs went and did the stupid cancelation mutipliers rather than adding in a tag. This is unfortunate, since all those units now counter most explorers, minutemen, and other non skirmisher non archer infantry.
(It also makes those cav units absolute crap at killing artillery)
