IamGrunt pulling

Post by giveuanxiety »

Did IamGrunt use the pull trick? I wouldn’t be surprised if he didn’t use it at all or like only used it on vils. Today you have to use the pull trick to be in the top tier of players. It would be cool to go through the few recs of his to see if he used it at all.

iamgrunt would pull low hp units out of the fight before it was cool to do so

You don't have to use the pull trick to be top tier.

In the era of grunt, there were a lot of one unit compositions, where pulling would be much less important.

AoE3 is a game where superior micro really wins fights sometimes though...
I agree with you in the sense that you can be a top player without using the pull trick, but sometimes being able to use it makes a world of a difference.

I would agree that you can be top tier without pulling. But you would expect all top tier players to be pulling units. And if you saw a clear point where a player should pull and if they didn’t that would look real bad.

I don't know for sure, but I don't think he did.

I used to be active on the old agesanc forums and played some of the good players of old a few times, but I don't recall any of them consciously pulling units on purpose during fights or ever talking about that.

So seeing that many of them also played VS grunt, I doubt he used it, otherwise it would have been a topic of discussion.

He was an adult while we were all teenagers for the most part lol... He has a special place in AOE3 history but I doubt he could beat the top players now.

The old grunt debate...

It is impossible to know for sure, but all the facts that we do know indicate the following:

1. The "old grunt" from 2008 would most likely lose VS today's top players, simply because of the evolved meta and tricks.

2. If grunt today started playing aoe3 again, it is also likely that he couldn't compete, even with practice, simply due to being much older and slow.

3. However, if hypothetically the grunt from 2008 or before was sent to 2019 and trained hard here for a while, I do believe he would be better than most, if not all top players. Simply because his basic RTS skill ceiling (when he wasn't as old as today) is much higher than most other players. This is indicated by his incredible aoe3 dominance when more Ppl played and also his strength in aoe2, a much bigger game.

1. Totally true

2. Wrong. He would be faster and outmicro almost everybody but lose on build orders

3. With time to adapt, 2008 grunt would probably dominate yea.

Na, not playing the game for 10 years would require a lot of practise to catch with APM. It's not only about how fast your fingers are, it's about how fast your brain works together with hands.

Grunt would get completely destroyed if there was an imaginary time machine to make 2008 grunt and 2019 pros play each other.
Probably with 300-500 prac games he would get to the around same level as top players. Whether he would be the best, is hard to determine. That's what I would expect.

Furthermore, AOE is quite simple game game and simple mathematical restrictions apply. I believe, at that time there were not wide range of top players as people had not maximized potential of civs. Nowadays it's different as there are tournament games/streams running 24/7 and if somebody invents new, slightly better BO, all players copy it immediately.

Any OP stuff were also copied back then, it's just that Grunt had almost always the most OP strat lol.
Anyway he casually played some qs games back in 2011-2012 and he had like 90% winrate.

That's bs, 2011-2012 was very high staked. All top JP players + pretty much all the upcoming euro players you get now (bsop lordraphael, etc.).
