Re: AOE4 Trailer Released
it looks better this way, but still i was hoping they'll push the graphics even further and make everything look more realistic. when you compare aoe3 and aoe4 graphics it feels like aoe4 is the older game which is ridiculous when you take into account that aoe3 is soon to be 15 yo

Re: AOE4 Trailer Released
You just got used to aoe3. It's like how you get used to how people look once you know them longer. At the start people look pretty ugly on average, but after a while they start looking okay because you've gotten used to it. I didn't watch or play aoe3 for a while and tuned into some streams because aoe4 got me excited. Boy, aoe3 is fucking ugly.Sargsyan wrote:it looks better this way, but still i was hoping they'll push the graphics even further and make everything look more realistic. when you compare aoe3 and aoe4 graphics it feels like aoe4 is the older game which is ridiculous when you take into account that aoe3 is soon to be 15 yo

AOE3 is actually not very realistic (compared to recent games), but it gives off this impression because:Sargsyan wrote:it looks better this way, but still i was hoping they'll push the graphics even further and make everything look more realistic. when you compare aoe3 and aoe4 graphics it feels like aoe4 is the older game which is ridiculous when you take into account that aoe3 is soon to be 15 yo
- ground textures are very blurry - this was done on purpose to make units and buildings stand out and have better contrast against the map terrain
- AOE3 buildings have awesome textures and models
- AOE3 warships have handpainted textures that were maybe one of the best ever made in the gaming industry
- it adds little ground details like footprints, shrubs, snowflakes, ice boulders in rivers
- tree models are smaller but still have some detail in AOE3
- units are smaller but have high contrast textures which make them easily visible
- particles, leaves, smoke add extra impressions of realism
Overall AOE3 seems realistic because the backgrounds are blurry and units are smaller and have good contrast. Also AOE3 lighting sets create enough contrast to make everything easily noticeable.

As I said the problem was the colours, not the graphics. Also the lighting wasn't idealRefluxSemantic wrote:
This is the trailer with lower saturation. I do think it looks much better. People with some doubts about the graphics will probably like this more.

Although I didn't really dislike it initially either, I can definitely see how people don't like it as much. But the good thing is that it's just a postprocessing effect. The core of the graphics is at least good. I also think people have been traumatized a bit by aoeo and that caused them to consider it cartoonish too quickly. Overall I'm actually pretty impressed by the graphics.BrookG wrote:As I said the problem was the colours, not the graphics. Also the lighting wasn't idealRefluxSemantic wrote:

Re: AOE4 Trailer Released
In the end all they have to do is make an expansion set in the colonial era and all will be good
Re: AOE4 Trailer Released
I feel like their is going to be no gun powder units like in aoe3. I love me some skirmishers and dragoon. Pls don't take them away from me for some pike man and javeling throwing skirmishers of aoe2.
Re: AOE4 Trailer Released
I also would much prefer proper cannons like those of aoe3 to the crappy ones from aoe2. I did not like siege warfare in aoe2 at all. Was quite sad to see the trebuchets in the clip
Whatever is written above: this is no financial advice.

Re: AOE4 Trailer Released
We should be excited. This is the first triple A base building RTS game that is releasing since sc2, and it's going to be as to age of empires as it gets.
Re: AOE4 Trailer Released
While it was totally expected they would go back to AoE2 era, since it's clearly the most successful and popular in the franchise, apart from the time setting nothing feels like it's AoE2 gameplay. It's closer to Total War and Stronghold, which I don't know if it's a bad thing or a good thing.
I am though worried about the graphical style as well. While I wouldn't define it as cartoony, I was expecting more realistic graphics.
Overall I have to say that the trailer didn't blow me away, mainly because of the graphics, I was expecting more. Hopefully it's going to be really good.

Re: AOE4 Trailer Released
That doesn't look cartoonish.
It's kind of like Civ VI. It's said to be like a cartoon but the graphics are pretty good. Unlike AOEO
the only thing I really care for at this point is whether or not the multiplayer scene is well cared for. tournaments, balance, moderation online, etc.

Re: AOE4 Trailer Released
We've been waiting for years. As an AoE insider, I already saw the arts and gameplay, but not this trailer. It looks pretty nice, the technical aspects of the game are very modern 2019'ish. Though, I still think this game is not gonna ensure a big switch from the other AoE communities. AoE2 players won't suddenly all leave AoE2 and go play AoE4. The same applies to us, AoE3 players. I think this game is mainly gonna attract new players, or players who have not played an AoE game in years. The hardcore AoE2/3 playerbase won't switch this easily.
But, in my opinion we can be very happy with this nice trailer! Good job Microsoft, Xbox and Relic!

There is some important info here:
Also in the comments there is more info from someone who I guess has a GameStar subscription.

Apparently the falcon is a mongol ability and works like a Terran scan. The winged scout can be sent by special ability (probably with cooldown) to uncover the Fog of War on the selected location on the map, he then circles for a while and provides the Mongols with such important information about the enemy forces. Say hello to the drone of the Middle Ages!

Re: AOE4 Trailer Released
form the second gamestar article
Units can be sent up to the walls through entrances at the foot of the wall. Mighty stone towers (an upgrade for unstable wooden spy posts) sit like rocks in the course of a river in the wall, on their sides wooden porches.
All civilizations use food, wood, stone, and gold, but not all collect them in the same way, use them in the same way, and need them in the same proportion.
Mulitplayer in Age of Empires 4 will support up to 8 players
All right, we'll talk about facts that are no longer a secret: Special and Hero units are confirmed for Age of Empires 4, for the Mongols it's the Khans. One of the abilities of these leaders is prominently presented in the trailer, without the viewer noticing it at first glance: The falcon who uncovers the British settlement at the beginning of the video does the same in the game.
The winged scout can be sent by special ability (probably with cooldown) to uncover the Fog of War on the selected location on the map, he then circles for a while and provides the Mongols with such important information about the enemy forces. Say hello to the drone of the Middle Ages!
This will again include four civilization levels or ages through which you will progress step by step, unlocking new buildings, technologies and units. But also here there are special features of the individual civilizations: The Mongols, for example, reach the third level at the most, a big disadvantage in the Lategame.
The new wall building options (you can now also build walls on cliffs and rivers without getting fiddly) fit in with the increased focus on siege battles in Age of Empires 4. It's no coincidence that the developers chose a storm attack on a city for their first video: With catapults, trebuchets, Rambocks and siege storms (important to bring attackers to the walls for the first time, where the defenders are already waiting) will drag their enemy fortresses.
"Age of Empires 4 should be playable on as many PC configurations as possible."

I'm starting to think this game might not be built around treaty mode

Re: AOE4 Trailer Released
I think the cartoonish feeling comes more from the textures and design, not colours, cause even with lower saturation I still have the same feeling. Shame, cause the landscape looks good. But it's definitely not the best graphics you could have in 2019 lol.
Also the historical period they chose saddened me, I wanted something new, and I am sure you could pull that off, but they went with the safe bet. I also dont think the time period was the primary thing that made AoE2 so popular, it mostly just coincided imo. It was the gameplay mechanics and some improvements that made the game soo cool in those years(but they may not be soo cool now).
It remains to see what AoE4 has on the gameplay part, but if it doesnt have any big, new cool features and it's very similar to AoE2 I have a strong feeling it will fail, cause it will not attract new players with that and also dont think the nostalgia will be enough to carry it(take in consideration the series is old as fuck and its fanbase shrank with time, a lot of people I played AoE in the past dont play games at all anymore). Actually, considering it has some competitions in the DE's(including AoE2 DE cause both are medieval), if it has some new things that the hardcore fans who remained dont like you will see them sticking to their games as someone said and not playing it. So basically, no new players, no old ones.
Anyway, we will see, but personally I am not excited.

Re: AOE4 Trailer Released
So from what this guy wrote about the second gamestar article, what caught my attention was that there might be a bit more emphasis on the turtling and sieging. I don't dislike it necessarily, but it's a very difficult thing to do right. aoe3 for example clearly did it wrong. But with the right sieging tools, the right cost of walls and there still being incentive to get map control, I think it could actually be really cool.

There's no need to be concerned with the way the game looks because you'll be able to change it via the "skins" you get from loot boxes
