Will there be Age of Empires 3 de EP patch

Post by bobabu »

The big advantage of age 3 de will hopefully be that there will be less failed to join. Less failed to join would be great for tournaments as well. Are there any plans to recreate the ep for age 3 de?

well if a dev starts actively taking care of the game, doesn't the EP become redundant?

maybe not for things likes maps and aiz UI though

I just hope DE is not going to implement all of the EP changes. Right now it is a big clusterfuck.

That seems to depend a lot on what DE turns out to be.

Hopefully, DE will include:
  • Better maps
  • Good balance
  • Good servers/networking
  • Anti-cheat measures
  • Spectator UI
That pretty much provides everything EP provides. If it checks all those boxes, I don't see why EP would be necessary anymore.

That is intended behaviour. This is to prevent the hunt from running too far from its starting position, which allows players to herd their enemies hunts all the way across the map, denying them the resources. In balanced maps where you have guaranteed access to a certain number of hunts, this is not a problem. Only on maps where your hunts spawn too far away from your Town Center will this be a problem.

@edeholland Hold on... So you can only herd so much until it keeps going back? It seemed random to me.

Yep. There's a maximum distance.

You should, yes. But the problem is that sometimes it will in fact back-herd randomly.

can't you just double cross it and shoot it in reverse at that point?

No, it runs back toward its original position

crafty bastards.

this isnt too big of a deal on EP maps though. since there are actually resources :) I think out of all the things that DE absolutely needs to have, it's Garja and Rikki maps.

Yes, as diarouga with the small d wisely said in the interview, maps are the most important thing to improve the balance. Only when the maps are consistent and plenty enough to make sure that each civ can be viable on a good number of maps with multiple styles of play, only then the actual inter-civ balance situation becomes apparent.

Backherding 'randomly' happens when the animals are too far from what their original position is supposed to be.

However we know that hunts tend to 'drift'. That is, without herding they will actually move around a lot and can sometimes cover big distances. I believe it's actually the case that this 'original position' which determines whether backherding happens drifts away alongside with the drifting of the herd.

That means that herding a herd that's drifting away from your TC is much more prone to causing backherding, as their origin position can end up drifting too far away from your TC.

disclaimer: This is speculation, but I do believe this is how it works.

well there is definitely randomness in it too because i have had the first shot on first hunt go backherd. or maybe it could be that the herd spawn position is different to herd "home" position so that on the game start they are already far from home

all I really want for aoe3 DE is for all the cards to be automatically unlocked. having to grind civs for hours to get cards was what turned off so many people coming from aoe2 and made aoe3 dead on arrival back in 2005.

Surely they can't be dumb enough to make that same mistake twice.

That probably won't be the case let's be realistic. What could get better are connection issues due to p2p. There are so many people who I knew that never really started to get into ae 3 because they couldn't join any game. So making an ep for de is important. Because even if they will fix a few things the game will remain stagnant and at some point, cheaters will start to pop up because they discontinue proper support. Who will even support the game, to begin with, Tantalus or Microsoft? Microsoft probably will support the game for long, I wouldn't be so sure about Tantalus though.

Given the active implication of the devs from AOE2DE, I wouldn't be so sure. Maybe we should keep doomsday to ourselves until things actually go bad. In which case the community has proven that it is more than capable of taking things into their own hands.
