Will hacks still work on DE?
Re: Will hacks still work on DE?
Not sure about this, but arguably P2P might be better for our current (small) playerbase. No need to connect to a central node that might actually increase the distance between players, and no regional servers so the playerbase isn't arbitrarily divided.
Hopefully the DE would bring many more people to the game, so this wouldn't be so much of an issue, but we have no idea whether that will happen or not.

There are pros and cons. For example, imagine the game isn't p2p and the servers crash as often as ESO server does right now. That would be basically unplayable.

For me in particular servers would be especially bad. I would always be at a disadvantage, haha. Oh well.

P2P is great for fighting games and their 1v1 matches. Another negative aspect of P2P is the lack of proper routing most of the times.EAGLEMUT wrote:There are pros and cons. There is no optimization between random player on area X to random player in area Y.
A centralized server, like the ones from Riot Games, Valve or Blizzard, are optimized for having a nice connection to their players. They bought a lot of resources from ISPs and CDNs all over the world to ensure stability and proper routing for the tiny packets that games send every second.
There are also hybrid models between P2P and dedicated servers.

Re: Will hacks still work on DE?
P2P theoretically is just superior for games. However building good/decent p2p architecture is just as difficult. P2p is easier to hack, though civ 6 has managed to implement decent anti hack systems. Also hacking shouldn't be an issue for initial couple years at least. I remember bans were still issued till 2013/14 for aoe 3.
Fine line to something great is a strange change.
Re: Will hacks still work on DE?
It depends on your definition of "superior". One player lagging shouldn't affect all other players in the game, imo. You could make an argument that it's more fair, but I would dispute it. I can't help that you live in Greenland or have a shitty PC. If I have a good PC and live nextdoor to the datacenter containing the server, I should be able to play lag free.
Re: Will hacks still work on DE?
If they are not working there are always smart players to create then
Re: Will hacks still work on DE?
I mean if they manage to make it so that people can't get multitudes of free accounts, then they could start instituting bans on people who hack so that the issue wouldn't be as bad. Unless the hackers want to shell out for a new game every time they want to play after being banned.

Do they work now?
