Why is AoE 3 > AoE 2?
Why do you prefer this game over that game. ty.
Alternatively if you do not feel comfortable participating in an inequality, please comment on why you like AoE 3 then.

Graphics came into mind
Re: Why is AoE 3 > AoE 2?
Better counter system (despite sepoy), shorter age 1, less APM and more strategy orientated, you can win games with good play before the late game. Main advantages of aoe2 to me is more friendly community and more games that go late game.

Faster paced, not a turtle fest, more unique civs

Faster paced and more variety.

These were my reasons too, plus, aoe2 was old and I wanted to play the newest version of the series.Mitoe wrote:Faster paced, not a turtle fest, more unique civs
The zone was also closed down and Voobly didn't exist back then and GameSpy was meh.
I regarded aoe2 as a LAN game only, playing it with friends can be a lot of fun.
On the topic, I like both games. Aoe3&2 (maybe AoM too, but didn't play that one too much), all Starcraft & Warcraft games are my favourite RTS games. Maybe add Command&Conquer somewhere into the mix too.

YumiW is actually better on aoe2.GiBthedurrty wrote:YumiW
Re: Why is AoE 3 > AoE 2?
The two gams are difficult to compare. I play both of them and enjoy the difference in features.
One thing that comes to my mind is the different handling of "missing shots" between the two games. While AoE3 has very few units who can actually miss a short (crossbows?), missing shots is widespread in AoE2. This has a significant impact on microing, but does not necessarily mean that one game is better than the other.
The counter system of AoE3 might look good on paper, but it somewhat destroys the civilizations' uniqueness by forcing their units to follow this standardization. The few units which are not designed along the common pattern (e.g. Urumi) are often considered broken. This is better implemented in AoE2, where the civilizations' supposedly small bonuses lead to substantial unit variety (see here for examples).

Aoe2 is not imersive at all, when i pick aztek (in theory, i am not gona do that) i don't want big swordman armored.
Ao2 is super boring to play and to watch, always same units...

I just started playing this one as a kid. Never played the second game. You could say I'm from the wrong generation to enjoy aoe2.
Re: Why is AoE 3 > AoE 2?
If AoE != 0, then divide both sides by AoE, so 3 > 2. QΕD
Correlation doesn't mean causation.

AoE3 is actually 1.5 times better than AoE2
Re: Why is AoE 3 > AoE 2?
Basically what Mitoe said, plus interesting historic setting. Games set in middle ages are far more widespread and common. I also had decent knowledge of european history up to about 1500-1600, so it was nice opportunity to learn something. Like I was really shocked when i found out some of the units (like camels with mortars on their backs) actually existed and their names often have meaning in native languages
Re: Why is AoE 3 > AoE 2?
Mostly because it's much faster paced and the army sizes are bigger. Also, it's so annoying to build so many stables in order to be able to spam units. There were a lot of other things that I disliked but most of them actually got fixed with the definitive edition. So it's certainly worth to start playing again.
Re: Why is AoE 3 > AoE 2?
The biggest improvements AoE3 made imo were the added XP resource and civ diversity. Both increased strategic depth.

I really liked the idea of the shipments. Brings a whole new dynamic into anrts game.
Although I was super pissed when I first saw that u have to unlock and lvl up ur city first to fully use it. When I first played this game when it came out with like 14 I also liked the customization options for ur town.
Also aoe3 was the first game I ever played online and I always came back to it over the years

I like the shipments mechanic, the quality of life things like batch training and infinite farms.
Also I much prefer the clearer counter unit system - sometimes it's hard in aoe2 or mythology to understand what counter what.

Also AoE3 is less micro intensive and more strategy oriented which I like better.

Don't follow this. I assumed AOE! is 6, so I don't understand how you are equating it to 0.BrookG wrote:If AoE != 0, then divide both sides by AoE, so 3 > 2. QΕD
Re: Why is AoE 3 > AoE 2?
there is a space between AoE and the exclamation mark, read carefully plzchris1089 wrote:Don't follow this. I assumed AOE! is 6, so I don't understand how you are equating it to 0.BrookG wrote:If AoE != 0, then divide both sides by AoE, so 3 > 2. QΕD
!= (or <>) is the sign for inequality in computers
And I can't divide by zero, or I break maths
