To add to @Theodore ,having worked at 2 major electronics retailers I can tell you that most consumer do not buy desktops. Desktops for personal use are almost exclusively purchased by 1)old people and 2)hardcore gamers. I wouldn’t categorize most people who play aoe as either.

how do you do résumes and banking and important applications without at least a laptop

That's coz normies don't see the point in spending so much on a compute box, when their phone or tablet can do all they need: browse the web, send/get emails, run apps, and some more (make phonecalls, take pics).
If they need something that runs some more serious applications, they'll get a laptop.

Big box PCs have become a niche thing for gamers, engineers that need heavy compute for CAD programs, video producers, audio producers, devs that need to do a lot of heavy code compilation, nerds that need to compensate for their small and hurt ego, etc.
