Zoom mod vs Increasing Resolution

Hey guys, which method to see more of the screen is better? I heard there is a 'zoom mod', but doesnt increasing the resolution much better? i run game at 3840 x 2160, and i can see a lot more on the screen.

I run the game at 400 x 300 and I can see perfectly fine.

I tried 1440p with VSR (since it finally came out for Tahiti AMD cards) and didn't notice a difference between that and 1080p

am i doing it wrong?
