Apparently they are working on transitioning ESO to newer servers which should be a good think long term. . .

Thanks for finding the announcement, I was at a loss as to where it might be.

Finally, we have some long-awaited news for the Age III community. We know the servers have been, shall we say, less than reliable. While we??ll continue to do what we can with the existing servers to keep them up and running, it??s time to bring these 10-year-old servers up to modern standards. In the coming months, we??ll be looking to transition the ESO service to a new environment that should provide much more stability to the game and prevent the currently all-too-common downtime.

More news:

We actually have multiple guys responsible for taking care of the servers to try to make sure someone is available whenever there is an issue. We're making improvements on the existing servers to try to reduce the number of crashes, but there are issues with them that we can't easily patch.

That's why we're moving ahead with a plan to migrate the entire ESO service to a new environment (see our most recent blog post). It's still a few months out, but in the meantime, we'll do everything we can to provide the highest server up time that the existing hardware will let us have.

From what they have said, they are aware of the issues and have people on it but can't keep the old servers running all the time (do you run a ten-year-old computer and operating system?). Furthermore, in a few months there will be a new server system. Therefore, we can probably lay these "ESO is down" threads to rest for the time being.

Nobody really knows this, but they are going to move to newer servers this year, so I imagine that's why they are unstable.

Yes, they are instable. You can still play on Gameranger or voolby, or try a mod in single-player like NE.

There is a chance if they are going to replace the 10 year old servers you think they wont make an official patch ?
Doing the servers thing is pretty expensive so yeah... why not
