If aoe3 units were chess pieces
I have this idea to create a playable chess scenario in aoe3 and got to wondering which units should represent which pieces? These are my ideas:
Pawn - pikeman
I think this is obvious as pikemen are cheap, ubiquitous, but still pack a punch in close range.
Horsie - hussar
both horses
Bishop - priest
starting to think this thread was a little too obvious to warrant making
Rook - falconet
now this one I struggled with a lot but settled on the falc because basically falcs deserve to be exchanged for actually usable units like priests and hussars and because forts would take up too much room
Queen - Isabella
My queen
King - Stuart
spoiled, kind of usueless, and arbitrarily important.

So all pikemen after reaching the end of the map can become Queen Isabellas??!!

Agree except for Bishop - I think this is Dragoon with fast movement and ability to snipe from weird angles.

Re: If aoe3 units were chess pieces
I suppose it depends on the civ. I personally would do:
Pawns: Musketeers
Rooks: Falconets
Knights: Hussars
Bishop: skirmisher
Queen: Lizzie the Pirate
King: Explorer
It’s really cool idea though!

How do you write a signature?

I think pawns are villagers. Without them the game wouldn't work. They can also transform into attacking units with a revolt.

Re: If aoe3 units were chess pieces
Obviously the most powerful piece being the Queen means that we alll should hail Queen Garja going forward.
!vikings, glory to Valhalla and GUA!!!!
Re: If aoe3 units were chess pieces
you should make it customizable for different civs.
pawn: macehualtin or puma
rook: jaguar prowl knight
knight: coyote runner
bishop: warrior priest
king: warchief
queen: skull knight
pawn: qiang pikeman
rook: flying crow
knight: meteor hammer
bishop: Shaolin monk
king: changdao
queen: manchu
pawn: macehualtin or puma
rook: jaguar prowl knight
knight: coyote runner
bishop: warrior priest
king: warchief
queen: skull knight
pawn: qiang pikeman
rook: flying crow
knight: meteor hammer
bishop: Shaolin monk
king: changdao
queen: manchu

Re: If aoe3 units were chess pieces
this does fit better with the conventional value system... bishop ~ knight < rook and even better with the finer value system that bishop >~ knight, but knights can situationally outshineharcha wrote:Agree except for Bishop - I think this is Dragoon with fast movement and ability to snipe from weird angles.
but cmon just put the guy with the bishop hat in for the bishop idk

Re: If aoe3 units were chess pieces
I tjhink the queen would be the cannon. or the rooks as cannons (but WOE does have towers)
So pawn:
musketeer
mishop: skirm
knight: hussar
king: explorer or 2 settlers m/f
rook: cannon or tower
queen: cannon or explorer
So pawn:
musketeer
mishop: skirm
knight: hussar
king: explorer or 2 settlers m/f
rook: cannon or tower
queen: cannon or explorer
Re: If aoe3 units were chess pieces
Since the queen is the strongest unit, it should be a fully upgraded gendarme or perhaps a hatamoto samurai.

Re: If aoe3 units were chess pieces
Pawn - Settler: smol but important and it makes sense that they can be "promoted" to military units
Knight - Hussar (ok)
Bishop - Priest (ok)
Rook - Falconet (alright)
Queen - idk, if you want to make a playable scenario how can you play Queen Isabella ? I mean she's not a unit. A female character like Amelia Black could be an option, as an OP unit like a Gendarme looks less like a Queen.
King - Explorer: he matches well with the King as he can't die and can be important in small fights
Knight - Hussar (ok)
Bishop - Priest (ok)
Rook - Falconet (alright)

A few trials -- I really like the abus gun as rook now and it's nice and compact. I think my favorite set up would be:
Pawn - pike
Knight - hussar
Bishop - priest
Rook - abus
Queen - Lizzie
King - Alan on horse

Rook - abus
Queen - Lizzie

The real question is what if aoe3 units were Go pieces.
ESOC : came for the game, stayed for the drama.
