There's no mention of war wagons in the official patch notes.
Patch 1.0.6 says "Numerous balance changes".
I installed the original game from the 2005 November discs without any patches a few years ago after reading about this war wagon nonsense but the stats were identical to Asian Dynasties as far as I can remember.
My best guess is non-treaty players got confused and perpetuated this myth.

As far as I know they had 20 range (22 with the arsenal up) and slightly more hitpoints.

seems like we non-treaty players didnt get confused (thats something treaty guys do when they think NWP is good) at all. Next time do your homework
Re: how good were war wagons
Damn, 22 range is insane
Re: how good were war wagons
I think there was also something with the way they interacted with skirms. Either skirms didn't have bonus or WW had big resistance to skirm. All I know is skirm didn't do shit

I don't remeber it about tad, but what i remember : china was too op and too hard to beat, then eso after did a patch the only moved the displacement to china to jap, who was considered tier 1 whit iro also in 2010. That's why in wcg was a mono jap war. In the old meta, there was more players and more op players, a lot of them was at the same level of h20, amd other considered near to be like grunt. Age was better played and known than now, there was players that had talent and not only nerd quality. The different was that now also a lt can reach pro games, ee have youtube e streaming. When age was active no pro will stream showing his skills and what to do. Few months ago i see players speaki g about 10/10 whit port...looking as it was lame or op. 10/10 was one of the first strategy born on tad. So if german wasn't considered the most op, is becouse pro knew others civ can be more lame. This my opinion my husband <3

Re: how good were war wagons
Germany peak OP was at the end of vanilla prior to TWC launch. After German got nerfed Spain was OP civ for a time then TWC launch came and Iro took over.

Omg the thoroughbeds change. Back when I was a little kid just playing against AI, I actually had to level up my civs. I looked at that card from france (a level 40 card) and really wanted to get that sweet pop reduction. By the time I hit level 40, I think TAD had already released (as I spend 90% of my games playing dutch back then aswell) so I never got to play around with 2 pop cuirasiers
Ive been wondering if I just had misread the card or something, but apperantly not.
Re: how good were war wagons
Don't jinites have 20 range. So think about age 3 jinites for free.

Though those are proper goons, not war wagons

That's a very limited comparison, I think.
Re: how good were war wagons
its pretty valuable when you are equal range to skirms and skirms only soft counter you then you kinda rape them.
Also dont forget you still get 9 ulhan 8 ulhan 3 ulhan 3 ww and other shit. So you always have some ulhan there too to prevent a good engage on the 20 range WW.

Re: how good were war wagons
It's definitely great. It's just not the same as Dragoons having 20 range, is my point.

Re: how good were war wagons
Actually 20 range goons only happens in age 4 with a card and arsenal tech. ww were 22 range in age 3 with the arsenal which is even more OP

it might actually be stronger than goons bcs ww have a lot of hitpoints and there main weakness currently, apart from their awkward hit and run capability , is that they can be so easily focus fired by skirms. With wws having the same range as skirms this wouldnt be as easy anymore bcs for nice focus fire you actually need to out range your opponent a bit so that all your units can fire instantly and dont body block each other. With 20 range WW This would mean that your skirms would have to get closer to the wws which would means more shots from ww while the skirms approach and also easier engagements from uhlans which germany will inevitably have.

I'm not discussing whether it's stronger or weaker; I'm pointing out that it's a different unit.

Re: how good were war wagons
I dont think 20 range war wagons change the pace of the game like 20 range goons do. They'd be better in standard battles but I dont think thats the main reason why 20 range goons are so insane.
