France definitely. They are so common to play and have nothing special which is hard to understand.

I would suggest French or British. I think British is the one I would pick first.

Otto for sure. No worry about constant villager production, and all you ever need is Abus + Jan.

France. has a variety of strategies/builds and isn't complicated to understand how they work.

I wouldn't recommend British as a starter civ at all. Either France or Ottos. Although, if you choose Ottos, don't continue to use Otto. Once you've got a basic feel of the game move onto France.

Otto is defiantly the easiest....all you have to do is set your home city spawn point on a hunt, make jans and you can get up to 2nd lt, mix some abus and go up to captain lol

I started off playing Otto, they're pretty straightforward to figure out the basics in my opinion.

This is not a true beginner civ, but Dutch should be mentioned. Their ability to make banks means they don't need to leave their base early. This may allow a new player to have a much smaller area to keep track of, not to mention a gold income that requires virtually no attention.

I would recommend Japan. It's a civ that teaches the importance of eco while your friend will not have to worry about herding and getting raided as much. This civ will also bring up the importance of a good build order as well.

Otto or France.
Worst civs to begin with are india and japan xD because you need ? very good micro/macro, a good understanding of the game and a good apm...

Otto is bad, you get used to not training any villies, plus noobs rarely rush so late game is important.
France is pretty average and straight-forward. Definitely France.

Not having to pay attention to the creation of vills is one less thing a new player has to pay attention to. There are so many small detail things that would be ottos a good civ for the first 50 games. I do agree that not making vills or having to can create bad habits.
