Map Information

Post by Mitoe »

The AoE3 Spring Championship has decided to take a different approach to the map pool than in previous events. Maps have been selected based primarily on their consistent resource spawn as well as to encourage as many playstyles as possible. The majority of the map pool is made up of custom maps and slightly modified versions of the official maps to improve resource balance, and allows us to present one of the most balanced map pools in any tournament to date.

A Note on Map Screws

Map Screw - An uneven distribution of resources which results in one player having a significant advantage over the other.

While the ASC presents a well rounded and balanced map pool, randomness is still a factor, and may result in imbalances on occasion. This page will outline the potential map screws for each map, so that players may restart in accordance with Rule 1.5 when necessary.

1. Kamchatka

The map is based on the Kamchatka river in the far east of Siberia.
The river cuts the land in two and due to the shallows it creates several different paths. The trade route crosses the map vertically, granting atleast one always accessible path to the enemy base.
In the winter version the river is frozen so the map is more open but also has less buildable surface. It is the only map in the pool without any native settlement.

2. Hudson Bay

The map representes the Hudson Bay in northeastern Canada. It is basically a remake of the Saguenay map with some improvements in the layout and in the resource balance.
The map has two versions, one winter and one spring. The winter version is covered with snow and has an ice rim around the water, as well as Yukon-based treasures. The spring version has typical saguenay terrain and 2 little islands. It also has some herdable sheeps.
There can be two different trade routes, one vertical and one semi-circular. Unlike the standard Saguenay map, native settlements are placed evenly (1 cree per side).

It is the third water map of the pool but it also has fairly abundant inland resources, although they may be placed a bit distant from the town center.
The trade route can be represented either by three bases in the middle or 2 bases next to each player. Native temples are placed accordingly to each version of the map.
There are also plenty of wild yaks to collect.
