Most Efficient Way to Donate

Post by purplesquid »

I was wondering what the most efficient way to donate. To my knowledge there are three ways to donate:
1) Twitch subs (tiers 1-3)
2) Donation through twitch link
3) Donation through website link (same as twitch link?)

What is the fee structure for each out these methods (and any others I may have missed) and is there a difference with where to money goes (e.g. tournaments vs site maintenance)

I know that many people have donated far more than me however I have donated some and plan to continue to donate going forward and would like to make sure as little as possible of my donated goes to large financial institutions.

I think there is a fee for every transaction no matter the amount. So bigger single donations do a bit better than smaller ones spread out. Not sure about the exact numbers.

For a twitch sub, I think 50% of the sub goes to esoc, the other half to Twitch. But there is value to Twitch subs, like emotes, twitch partnership, etc.

I just hope DE is not going to implement all of the EP changes. Right now it is a big clusterfuck.

As far as I know, donating throw twitch (especially sub) is not the most efficient way to donate.

I think less than 50% goes to ESOC but I could be wrong. @admins ?

It used to be that you could donate to n0el and he would hold on to the monies for ESOC, but now it goes through streamlabs. Interesting

This was my understanding as well after doing some outside research but I wanted an admin to confirm. I may go from a tier 3 sub down to a tier 1 and then donate the difference directly but would really like the hard numbers

Another thing you can do is provoke other players to re-sub by gifting them subs. In this case it is better to cover as many players as possible so gift them tier 1 subs.

Donation through the links is best in terms of raw money to ESOC. My understanding is that few structure through n0el's PayPal was the same so we switched it out so it all goes through the same place.

Making your donations during a big stream is always a good idea for sure.

Subs nice for other reasons, including raising awareness to other players, and probably helps us maintain partnership.

Yeah was also wondering how significant the fees are. If they are say 1% then it really does not matter however if it is like 10% (or even 5%) then maybe it would make sense to do some financial engineering. For example if I wanted to donate $250 right now then instead of sending to ESOC I could just send directly to the winner of the INcogs Empire Cup and avoid an extra transfer and the fees associated therein.

Again I am not sure if the fees are large enough to warrant the effort. But I think that there could be an opportunity, if only for the larger donations, to save some on the fees which in turn can go back to the community.

Also noticed that you can cheer on the twitch channel. I assume that is more efficient than subs but less efficient than directly donating?

Mostly all of them. I used to work at at a convenience store and selling money orders was huge business. This is why we need postal banking.

In the past, I've donated a lot of money using Paypal, which is an absolutely deplorable company, and the main reason why I rarely donate these days. Shun subscriptions like the plague, unless you really want the so called perks, or to donate to Twitch itself. Unfortunately, you're going to get fucked no matter what you do, though.

As someone who donates via the donate button and twitch subs, I would say that both are valuable. Subbing and gifting subs has a special value in that people get some cute badges, don't have to watch commercials, and get to feel special. I like this. Makes me feel good too as I'm gifting something to someone else. It helps support the channel a bit less financially, but it looks and feels nice. You can always stagger a bit between gifting subs and donating. I do this. This way you can get benefits of both. I'm a bit tipsy right now. Sorry if this doesn't make sense.
