MU of the week: Spain vs Japan on Herald Island

Welcome to MU of the week. Every week a thread will be opened where we go over a certain match, set on a certain map. Hopefully the discussion will be in depth and top players will share their insight. Replays are definitely welcome so that people may support what they have to say. To make things even more interesting and engaging, we'll set the match-up on a certain map.

This week's featured match-up is Spain versus Japan, the map is Herald Island.

Welcome! Credit for this idea goes to @kami_ryu @lemmings121 as well as @musketeer925 & @BrookG building upon it. They are the masterminds behind this pretty nice idea!

Japan probable has an hard Times dealing with some spain ff. I would say japan Can counter all in ff by making full ashi in age 2 (maybe mix cav after killing the 1st push), but you probable need to play age 3 vs spain greedy ff. What do you think ?

Seems like it all hinges on japan dealing with 2 falcs from spain, how to do that best is the question

Yea I agree, I haven't found a BO as Japan that counters everything because as you said, if you go full ashi you'll hold the all in ff but you'll lose to the eco ff because of skirms.

I don't know how he does it, but from my experience, it simply does not work vs the agressive ff. It works well vs the 19v ff though.

As Spain with my pike build I struggle the most against full Ashigaru. They're pretty good in general, too, as eco FF requires some time to get things rolling, leaving few defences up until certain point.

easy to scout an aggressive ff from spain, you start 600w anyway (600w 600g) vs greddy ff and (600w adapt) for colonial play. Age to age 3 with the shogunate in this MU

Hum, no, it's really not that easy... Sometimes 15v age up and agressive tower is followed by 5v into eco ff, Spain can adapt until like 6min30, and at this point, you'll have to send your 2nd colonial shipment as Japan so the Spain player can also adapt.

How about spamming walls vs aggressive FF? How about spamming walls in general? Need some of that macro auto pillar delete while you're at it.

If you spam walls you can safely go for a 600w/600c FF into 2 flaming arrows or 1000c and pure ashi with castle defense. Without walls you might have quite some trouble and probably need CM and villager micro.
You should really get a TP though and try to put shrines on food whenever possible to persevere your cherry orchards longer; the shipment usually needs to be delayed until there is really no other chance as you need to send military units.

If you sent boats put them on food unless you feel you'll use up your coin mines real fast.
