So I have been building up the level for Britain. Playing medium difficulty. It seems to me there is only one way to play. Get the card for 6 archers. Rush their area, and kill and harass their villagers. = Cheese. I can go afk and come back to the game and maybe find the AI has quit.

If I stay at home and build economy, I get swarm after swarm of the enemy hitting me. Eventually it overwhelms me.

I have even tried the 6 archer cheese. Then built up and leveled to 5. I take the majority of the gold/wood on the map. Build layers of walls. Upgrade everything. Build to max pop and wait for the AI to slowly recover. Eventually they rebuild and head my way. Same thing. Swarm after swarm and they eventually overrun me.

Hopefully I'm missing something because both options starting to bore me.

You sound like a troll, because I can't believe that someone can't beat the AI at medium difficulty, but I'll answer as if you weren't lol.
No there is not only one way to play, and going for an agressive strat against the AI isn't even the best way to beat it.

PS: How did you find this forum? I can't believe that a guy who's played what? 10 games asks how to beat a medium AI on a gaming forum.

@Diarouga not everyone is as OP as u. Some people do other stuff in life besides game and so beating a medium AI is not so easy and so they need help. Not tryna be rude to ya but ya should relax and let the person ask some questions without being picked apart

EDIT: @potato honestly I would just make musk rather than LB to raid them while trying to make enough manors to have a good economy behind you! If that makes sense anyways. Try to kill villagers while dodging the AI's army and eventually you should have a bigger economy than them!

Why a troll? Seriously, did you even read what I wrote?

Not sure if I could ask any differently. When I rush early with 6 archers, I win in a cake walk. If I lay back and build, I get overrun eventually. Even with level 5 and all upgrades. I am only level 23 so still need many cards but still.

I found the forum with something called Google.

@potato You actually described 2 ways of playing it. How about something in-between? Both economy-oriented and aggressive.
Keep making settlers and let them hunt if you have been making mills. Build manors until 10min. Build a barracks, train units and ATTAAAACK!

You'll eventually reach the Private rank, which is something we all desired to achieve.

I have seen rankings mentioned before, but not sure what my ranking is now, or how to improve it.

Well, I can't remember what the games name was, but you could defend when playing. I like the idea of building up and defending. Doesn't seem like an option, although obviously i am still learning.

Wow.
Just remember first couple of times you played this game. Also, not everyone spends majority of their time playing this game.

Can you record a game vs. A.I, so we can identify what you're doing wrong and what you could do better?

TIP: If you are about to lose you should, quickly build a church and train a spy. Hide the spy in corner of the map and let AI run around trying to find it.

Keep training settlers constantly until you reach maximum (99 settlers). Then just make sure your settlers are working and not idle while you make the unit of your choice. I don't think you need to be any fancier than that to beat medium AI.

make grenadiers and kill their houses, they have a hard time rebuilding them because they cost wood, and at some point wood no longer exists on the map.

I beat medium easily ( as your supposed to), when I rush early.

When I don't rush, I only get to about 70 villagers.( I will try 99). I end up with 20k+ of each resource, plus max population before the swarm arrives. Slowly but surely get run over.

Is this 1v1 or 3v1? I remember playing against medium AI myself a lot as a kid with several opponents and winning, almost certainly playing a lot worse than you do.

@potato Try this simple build order as brits:
- age 1: train vils constantly, all settlers on food. First shipment is 3 vils. Make 1 house, or 2 if you have enough wood. Age up to age 2 (with the 500f reward) when you have somewhere between 15 and 20 vils and you have 800f banked.
- when aging to age 2: all settlers on wood, make as many houses as possible.
- age 2: ship 700w and make a barracks, and more houses. Switch your vils to food (around 75%) and coin (around 25%). Train musketeers as constantly as possible, and when you have 30+, go attack the AI.

I think with that you should crush the AI easily. It's not exactly the right way to play brits, but it's a good start. Don't forget to always train vils, and try to have as few idle vils as possible.

I apologize for my poor English. I am not able to convey very well my concerns.

I appreciate the tips. They will serve me well when I try the next level.

Currently I beat medium with ease. Boringly so. Attack early with my 6 archer card and I win going away. As mentioned, I have actually AFKed and came back to the game only to see the AI has quit.

When I semi rush and kill Villagers, the AI leaves me alone. I can take the maps gold and wood. Level to 5. Get all advances. Get max population. 3 layers of walls. Then sit back and wait for the AI to rebuild and eventually level and move forward.
When they do rebuild they will attack..... and I will lose eventually. I can't build more than the population limit. I have all the wood and gold from the map. Yet the AI seems to have unlimited resources to over run me ... and I repeat, only when I don't rush early.

Perhaps you'd enjoy playing with real players which is going to be more dynamic of course. Otherwise you could try some sort of AI mod to spice things up.

Why are you trying to go age 5 and get all upgrades, if you can win earlier? You should maybe just keep rushing, and play hard/expert AI, instead of medium.

In theory I would like to play real players, but as someone earleir mentioned, with my 'skill' I would get smacked down hard and lose in a 10 min game.

..and I know nothing of mods ..where to get them ..what to get ..or how to install them

Because I like to defend

I enjoy that play style. Which is why I made this post asking if I'm trying to fit a square peg into a round hole with this game. I played AOE 1 years ago online. I still have nightmares of being rushed.

The trick is joining players of a similar skill, not those who are twenty ranks above you. Sort the game rooms by rank and join the lowest "Conscript" rooms first.
