If I was starting over to actually learn the game I would go france. If you just want to win at low levels go ottoman or iro

What so good about french
Re: Strategy for noobs
@Darkmaster343 France has better vills, their royal guards are skirms (voltigeurs) and Curassiers (gerndames). THey also start with a natvie scout, so you can put it onto stealth mode and you can see the troops that they are making, the troops that they have etc. They have very good native upgrade shipments (authough i personally dont do native alliances much), they also have powerful cav upgrades. This is part of the reason that in team games people try and get french to do cav. Then they also have curassiers in age 3 which are powerful hand cav. I hope this helps some people but i am happy to suggestions since my main civs are dutch and brit.

The reason why they are good to start is that they are the most similar to the old aoe civs which makes them perfect to get started and get to know how the game works and the different strategies avaliable, specially if you have played previous aoe games. They are a very flexible and adaptable civ that can do a bit of everything (boom, fortress builds, rush...). They are not too hard or too easy either. Civs like brits or germany require a lot more macro skills. While civs like otto are just too easy and although u will win a lot of games with them u will gain little to no skill. Of course that is my opinion, I hope it helps

Re: Strategy for noobs
Reasons France is the best civ for learning the game:
1. Every single basic unit type is available to them, so you will get to know each of them right away.
2. You can play them in whatever style you want. Some civs are limited to play aggressive, others to aim for the midgame and others to play defensive and aim for the late game. France is not the best civ at anything (maybe team?) but in the upper half for every playstyle. This means you get to learn different strategies with them.
3. Your villagers are stronger than others, so you will not lose as many to raiding as you would with other civs.
4. They are not too difficult.

Re: Strategy for noobs
France doesn't have any real unique bonuses that might put you off guard while playing other civs (disregarding unique units). They're just a very solid civilization and they're capable of playing a handful of playstyles as opposed to other civilizations which only have one or two viable playstyles. Look around in the strategy forum for build orders and start practicing one or two of them. Once you've improved your mechanics and game sense, you should try out other civilizations and improve that way.

Re: Strategy for noobs
Rapha's and Diarouga's France guides are pretty nice. You will find both on the wall.
Pay more attention to detail.
