When you can't fight the tide

Post by Root_Foot »

There's probably other threads like this but I didn't know what keywords to search. Anyone have a game situation where you felt you did everything right, but you still lost? I'd love to hear some stories to help improve my game. I know certain civs are particularly vulnerable to rushes (Otto vs British, Russians vs Dutch, etc.), and some build orders are notoriously OP. Let's make a compilation, yeah? I'd post some of my own stories but I almost always make glaring mistakes when I lose :P

There are shitloads of games where I felt that I played perfectly but still lost

...but then I watched the recording.

Always record your games and re-watch them.

In online games that I am not hosting, the "record game" box is unclickable. Is there a way around this?

Also to everyone else: I state in OP that my mistakes are glaring :P . 50% My eco fails because I'm focused on a doomed rush, 20% my colony is rushed before I am prepared because I am hyper-focused on economy, 10% I lose a decisive battle because my micro is distracted (pro tournaments have helped me with this a lot...dang those guys click fast), 10% poor coordination with allies i.e. none of have anticav when the time comes that it counts, 10% my enemies are cheating hacks!!!

I'm looking for stories. One time I was in a 2 v 2 with a British ally on Deccan as Germans. I had not scouted properly, and when my ally was being attacked I bet foolishly that both enemies were distracted, and I sent an army of skirmishers directly at the enemy's wall. He was waiting for me with Hussars and I was not watching closely enough  by the time I noticed it was too late. Luckily my ally was a sportsmenlike loser.

But you must have heard a pro say at least once that an expert of equal skill will always beat them in certain civ matchups? Like say, Portuguese vs. Iroquois?

I've had tons of games with 20—30 point advantages that were lost — mainly due to a lost battle, caused by a wrong composition or positioning. And then you feel like you were defeated because you didn't make the right units.

Technically those are loses but if you watch the recorded games you will see that in the 1st game I was in a good position (about to fight 20 uhlan and 20 skirm vs 20 yumi and 5 musk) and the 2nd game was basically over

You're probably losing because of poor unit management or bad/not scouting. You can post a recorded game if you want more tailored feedback.

You know, you walk out the door. You see someone that you know, and they ask you how you are, and you just have to say that you're fine, when you're not really fine, but you just can't get into it because they would never understand.

Thanks for the suggestion, I definitely will! Like I said in earlier posts, most of my game-losing mistakes are obvious to me. I would really appreciate a scathing analysis on a recorded game that I feel shouldn't have gone so sour.

Thats why I have started to play team games, you can more or less get away with a one unit composition.
