Does it really have a point after the Fortress Age? I mean... I kind of get the feeling that the only reason the Hussar is still a unit the French have at all is because the developers thought that Cuirassiers on the Colonial age would be extremely overpowered.

They are significantly tankier than cuirassiers, but have far lower damage output, especially against infantry.

Or that Cuirs in the Colonial age would be extremely useless. How are you supposed to afford a unit that costs 150f 150c that early in the game?

Besides, it's not bad that certain units are more useful at different stages of the game. Certain units become obsolete the longer the game goes while others are too expensive or not strong enough without upgrades early on.

Imo aoe doesnt have enough of that. Most units stay viable throughout the game. There should be more exclusively early/late game units. Right now the only real late game (not mid) units are artillery and a few special units.

aoe3's unit design is somewhat bland. Instead of a complicated unit system (like aoe2 and sc2 for example have) they just decided to go with rock paper scizors.

Although to be fair, xbows are replaced by skirms, musketeers are replaced by goons, hussars by gendarmes and falconets eventually by horse artillery. So actually almost all units are replaced by another unit. It's just that those are simple upgrades rather than exciting different unit types.
