Complementary Civ to Ottoman?

  • Quote

Post by scarm »

Hey Guys,

i used to play AoE 3 a lot, but was mainly playing Treaty (at an ok level, am PR 19, might have been slightly higher if not for ladder anxiety making me mainly play unrated lol) and am only recently slowly learning supremacy.

As my first civ i've chosen to learn how to play Ottos, and have a handful of decent BO's i am working on rn (being the FF 2 Falcs mames, colonial abu/jan pressure, semi FFing, and Hussar Revolution for fun).

Considering that every Civ has its weaknesses/bad MUs, what are the ottoman's, and which would be a good secondary civ to learn to compensate for them; in case i would for example enter a tournament of ESOC.

Kind regards,
Scarm

Good civ choices :-p

Try a civ that is harder to macro, I would say Portugal if you want totally differents skills.

Ports are a good suggestion. Alternatively, India is quite difficult to master and, as I see it, requires entirely different skills compared to Ottomans. India ends up with a strong economy and is also quite versatile, so you can have plenty of different approaches and strategies.

Unit-wise India has a comparably strong musket type unit, Sepoy, which can also build stables/barracks with the corresponding card. At the same time, India completely lacks the artillery which you might be used to as Ottomans. India also has a special unit which can only be sent via Homecity cards just like the Spahi: the Urumi. A quite strong unit with a unique role being basically a melee skirmisher doing area damage.

Although I love the Indians, I was never really sure of how to feel about the Urumi. I guess that... It is not that I feel that it is weak: It is that I feel that it is not strong enough to justify its "gimmick" of only being possible to send by shipments. Or maybe it is because, since it is much more frail and much slower then the Spahi, I find myself letting then die more often. Maybe it is just I that am bad at using then, though :p

One nice thing about the Urumi (compared to Spahi) is that there is an infinite card for 9 Urumi. In treaty games, you could choose to wait until you have more shipments ready and then slowly mass them. I always had the impression that Urumi are nice for a push, but of course they wear down at some point. One advantage of them is a relatively high siege dmg, unusual for skirmisher type units.

Does anyone know wheter Urumi profit from the general +15% melee attack card?

Thanks for your suggestions so far :) Think i will play around with Ports and Indians a bit and see how i am doing.

How well do Ports and Indians fare without TPs? Since Ottos seem really reliant on them, i think it would be nice to also have an option for Maps without TPs.

@j_t_kirk yeah :D was contemplating whether to use Germany, bavaria, none at all or belgium because i lived there for a few months and really liked it a lot, but home sweet home beat them all after all lol

@duckzilla do you mean the Dravidian Arts card? They do for some reason.

Yeah, I meant Dravidian Arts. Good to know!

Both do not rely on TPs. India can even build Sacred Cows to improve XP gain!

Generally the war chief civs are good to boost your ability to multitask, especially aztec where you are managing the firepit, warrior priests, macro, micro, and a very good selection of units. Iro is really good if you like otto, and sioux really is its own civ in every way and always worth a try on open maps

If you want to learn supremacy do not play ottomen. You learn nothing with them. You do not have to make vills, you never explore eco builds, you make the same 2 units every game and ship falcs and mams
Really just play any other civ
