Yes, you can usually build gates, even if you have no pillars.

I think it's an obstruction thing, similar to standing on a foundation. Kinda sucks though.

You can build a gate with unit nearby if you build another gate at the same time (select more than one wall), but it will also cost more than 1 gate ofc :P

This is actually a pretty helpful tip for the lategame when you don't have time to move the units to create a wall. Thanks!

So I actually tested it a bit and I think I managed to do it once but I cannot replicate it. One thing that is for certain is that this never works:

Selecting all 5 of the segments in a row and trying to gate, the one with a villager standing next to it never gates. I know because I've seen this happen lots of times in treaty. Maybe the segment that can be gated needs to be a certain distance away, idk.

It matters what order you select walls. Don't select the wall with units near first.

Actually I think I remember now. Walls that are too small for gate can be gated if selected together with a wall that can be gated. My bad xD

how about how it lets you make an instigate out of a wall segment foundation that is unbilt/half built. WTF is that? It has 0 HP, can never be built by a vil and there is nothing you can do abuot it but delete and waste all ur money
