I tend to fuck up my builds at the moment but I'm learning a lot. Iroquois is a really fun civ to play and I really like their style.

at the beginning you will lose against them but with a little practice time and patience they will then lose against you one day

France is typically the recommended civ for new players because they're strong (without being OP) and very versatile. If you master them, your transition to other civs will be easier because you'll know already know all of the standard builds (since France does them all). Their strong villagers also make them more forgiving than other civs, since raids are less of a concern.
No matter what you choose, try to stick with one or two civs and master them before trying others. As a new player it's really tempting to try everything, but you won't improve this way.
