Pet Thread!!

Post by I_HaRRiiSoN_I »

Nothing special here, just a collection of all animals which can be picked up from treasures as pets and how they compare to Native Converted Animals and Treasure Gaurdians

Key points
- Converted animals copy the treasure guardians stats with the converted HP being 60% of the original treasure guardian HP
- Converted animals do not get better with ageing up, only pets do.
- pets get better with age: +20% in age 2, +30% in age 3, +40% in age 4 and +60% in age 5,
- Cumulatively compared to base stats in age 1 this is: +20% in age 2, +50% in age 3, +90% in age 4 and +150% in age 5,
- Probably biggest disappointment is the pet tiger: 120Hp, 14 attack and 1,2x multiplier vs TG.
- Rhinos are massive tanks which can be converted by native civs (just 0.6x HP of base HP of treasure gaurdians for pirates/Asian outlaws etc.)
- No surprise that Honcho the Pet Grizzly Bear is OP compared to its normal treasure guardian stats
- All pets have a 5 movement speed with a 10% hand resist.
- Pet Grizzly in age 2 can tank 10 Age 2 hussar swings before dying.
- I always thought lions and tigers had same stats but one specialises in HP while the other attack, not by much though.
- You can train Doug the orangutan's on indonesia, 190food each.
- Sioux can ship 3 grizzly pets in age 2.
- indians can ship team 2 rhinos in age 2, the equivalent of team 2 axe riders in age 2 trolololol! (but cant siege or kill vills but do decent versus heavy infantry)

For comparison, Age 3 Elite Axe Rider: 312HP 43 Attack. Age 3 Pet Grizzly: 330HP 44 Attack. So if your in later ages and you see an easy grizzly bear/rhino to take, its the equivalent of picking up an eltie/champion/legendary axe rider for free which is something I guess.

Have fun completing the national pokedex you aspiring Pokemon champions!

Honcho is actually insane. If you can pick him up on Colorado you can take any treasure easily. It does 81 melee damage to a treasure guardian and it does very decent against explorers as well. I believe the treasure guarding Honcho was changed to 2 grizzly bears on EP, so it's easy to pick up for all civs now.

One key point you're missing: Non-converted pets can convert livestock as well. Use this on maps like kamchatka to get the free in-base monkey with a villager and immediately send it around the map scouting for goats.

Shipping 3 grizzlies has always been 200iq for sioux players, and pets in general are underrated as free tanks

The pet grizzly is the best by far, and its attack needs to be nerfed, now that it's takeable. Though we don't want to nerf the sioux shipment obviously

Or just revert that specific treasure to 3 treasure guardians now that people understand how useful a pet grizzly can be

I appreciate this thread, and your input on the issue, which Kaiserklein noted to me, recently. I think it makes more sense to nerf strength, than to nerf takeability, though. This is particularly true for treasures, since they are competing directly with each other for hero investment, and have a strong tendency to break balance in a given game, if they are too unequal.

The current suggestion is this:

– Honcho The Pet Grizzly guardian and hero multipliers decreased from 3 and 1 to 1.2 and 0.5, respectively.

How often do the Grizzly pet has any impact on a high profile game ? Never ? Then why nerf ?

@zoom just because something is good doesn't mean you have to nerf it instantly. imo leave guardian multiplier as is

Nerf should be for thing that are game winning no matter what. You can hardly pretend it's the case for the grizzly pet.

Lol, I'm so tired of Zoi playing god with the game. Let's nerf units we never see in the game, and buff common units for the sake of making the change list longer !

So the pet coyote with 3 guardians is actually worse than a free monkey?

Disagree. Buffing units we never see means we might see them more which is nice and adds depth. And I don't find the complaint of the change list's length all too compelling. I think it's an antagonistic response to change because of change. Of course there is a point of too much but I really don't think we're there yet. The most impactful changes are few and simple to internalize.

Because of feedback from several top players, whose opinions I both trust and value. Listening to them is very helpful. Other than basic logic (especially in Discovery Age, if you've ever experienced or read its power, it's an incredibly strong unit), that's all there is to it.

Still, it's only a suggestion. I'm always happy to reconsider, depending on feedback.

Nerfs should be for anything that good players consider significantly overpowered. That's my general melody!
