Should Off-Topic be Deleted?
Should Off-Topic be Deleted?
Hi all.
I created this poll to see where the community stands on Off-Topic. I am by no means speaking for or reflecting the priorities of the Community Team; this is purely to satisfy my own curiosity.
Please give your thoughts, but know that all the usual forum rules still apply.

I think the offtopic section is the perfect place to be modded by @fightingfrenchman on internship base

Should definitely not be closed . However I do think moderation should be loosened up a bit , off topic is more fun that way .

Re: Should Off-Topic be Deleted?
1.) I voted no and stricter moderation, but not removing/locking posts based on subjective level of "quality" determined by mods, but tightening down on allowing racism/bigotry.
2.) I agree with dietschlander here, I could just be a mod for the off-topic section and that would satisfy the #modtheear movement.

Should NOT be closed. I would not mind spanking posts that are trolling, flaming or just spawning evilness.

Forum seems bugged. I can't vote for Garja.
Pay more attention to detail.

My thoughts were clear in my previous statement, and the fact I tagged one of the community members as well, means that I am curious about his upcoming statements on this issue.

Off topic is the shit post zone so why do you want to moderate it?

Off-topic should be off-limits to dummies. At least three unique internet as advertised IQ tests should be submitted as proof, taken as an average, and only those above 110 (one standard deviation above mean) can participate.

Seeing the "should i clean it or get a new one" threads get annihilated was really sad imo. I'm gonna go with "no, and loosen moderation"

This is consistent with Ear's moderating philosophy

No but in all seriousness, i'm gonna say i agree with ear on this one. I couldn't really tell when someone's crossing the line with "racism and bigotry" since i tend to let stuff sink in, but some conversations have surely become unpleasant for those reasons while some other posts were deleted/locked despite being of no harm.

Afaik no posts were deleted there, but the last poster removed his own submission which broke the link to that thread.

In practice it's usually pretty easy to distinguish between controversial opinions and blatant racism. When users are openly racist (see: World Cup thread), we typically respond quickly and forcefully. Obviously we don't catch all of it, which is why it's important for users to report posts that are over the line.
It's a bit harder to nail down what's "harmful", and I think this is where most of the disagreements over moderation policy pop up. I personally am of the opinion that silly/spammy/pointless threads are harmful, because they crowd out the actual content. I don't think it's healthy for 9/10 threads on the active discussions panel to be those fake "who's [player's name]" threads that were being spammed a few weeks back for example, because it makes it hard to navigate ESOC and gives newcomers a very bad first impression. This is the philosophy that has governed my behavior while I've been a moderator, and I hope that even if you don't agree with it, it makes it clearer why I respond to certain situations the way I do.

Re: Should Off-Topic be Deleted?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't side-bar off topic "opt-in" at the moment?
The "who's [player name]" series was really the natural response to the ESO smurf epidemic, an epidemic I don't expect any active moderator to be familiar with. Content is something more than just words -- if everything was to be taken at face value where would the humanities exist? The threads were a collective outcry -- spammed, yes, so as to relate the desperation of the thing. And at just one question each, "who is [player name]" there's really an existing overarching sentiment, despite the individual threads directed at individual identities, which poises a larger, deeper inquiry, that is, "who is [anyone]?" And some people got that. The threads were well received. That big question was asked. But then it was shut down?
Honestly I suppose I shouldn't expect ESOC staff to get it. We're surrounded by interaction, interaction is embedded in context, darn us for wanting to get to the root of context? To discern what is happening, who is happening?
