Would ESOC have been better off if they banned the trolls?
Would ESOC have been better off if they banned the trolls?
Disclaimer: I don't want to start a fight or point fingers, I'm just curious to hear some ideas on this.
I just read the latest news post where the majority of comments were off topic/trolling nonsense and I couldn't help but wonder what would have happened to ESOC if moderation had been stricter and notorious trolls (like for example the basement and other shitposters) were actually moderated. What would ESOC be like then? Would that have had any effect in the long term? Would there be more strategy/aoe3 related discussions here? Would people be more respectful towards eachother? Or would it just have killed the community or killed off topic? I'm curious to hear your thoughts.

Nah, it was definitely better to ban the guy who talked about strat!
Re: Would ESOC have been better off if they banned the trolls?
I'm rather sure there'd be more AoE3 discussion and less toxicity, but that is not necessarily a good thing. Also, you have to take into account that you are banning people. That in itself is a negative.
Pay more attention to detail.

I think it's an interesting question, the strictness of moderation and how it affects the community. Personally I prefer pretty strict moderation.
I think once a community exists it is hard to change the strictness, because you already attracted an audience (and posters) that likes or at least accepts the current environment. Change it and most of that audience/posters will probably not like it. I believe in the fact that you have to choose the strictness level from the start, or there will be major complaints and setbacks in quality content. But I really don't know for sure, that's just a theory...

Surely there was a point in the beginning stages where there wasn't a reason for moderation either way. Somewhere at that point I'd say it might have been viable to actually take a different approach to dealing with trolls. I'm really curious what it would have been like. I'm inclined to think things would be somewhat better to be honest.

I'm not sure banning people is a negative thing per definition. I don't really see why it would be.
Re: Would ESOC have been better off if they banned the trolls?
The act of banning is negative for the person being banned. Assuming you care about that, it is something to take into account.

Interesting question. I guess it's fun to thow ideas around about this, but I wouldn't trust anyone's opinion about this, since it's just so unpredictable.

Re: Would ESOC have been better off if they banned the trolls?
I know two cases of strict moderation with different result.
Teamliquid was always extremely strict but kinda appears to have died out lately. I feel like thats partially because they are really picky when it comes to creating new threads and thus all discussion was merged to a few topics which made the forum very inactive.
Day9tv is another case. Its a twitch channel thats always in subscribers only and also just straight up bans all annoying trolls. I find that the twitch chat there has an extremely pleasant and constructive environment. Its only for paying members, but to be fair almost all active esoc trolls have donated in the past so I feel like moderation still has something to do with it.

Its obviously not a factual discussion, but Im curious to hear some ideas.
Unfortunately 2018 ESOC members are more interested in spamming some nonsense in this thread. Oh well, maybe thats also making a point?

I don't think it's so bad, besides the few troll post are written in such poor manner that I wouldn't bother to read them to begin with.

Seemingly not. You responded to my post, indicating that you read it in full - meaning that you don't consider it a troll post.
