Official Best Movies Thread

Post by deleted_user »

So this is the official best movies thread.

I have a great respect for Roger Ebert as a film critic and person, and I like his taste. When convenient I've been trying to whittle away his 4/4 list of great movies: https://www.rogerebert.com/great-movies
If I have a criterion for choosing the greatest films, it's an emotional one. These are films that moved me deeply in one way or another. The cinema is the greatest art form ever conceived for generating emotions in its audience. That's what it does best. (If you argue instead for dance or music, drama or painting, I will reply that the cinema incorporates all of these arts).
These are Ebert's top 10, of which I've seen none: https://www.rogerebert.com/rogers-journ ... f-all-time

My personal favorite film ever is Synecdoche, New York.

The others that are just great that are among my favorites, but are not all of the ones I've necessarily seen on that list are as follows:

The Good The Bad The Ugly
Crumb
Leaving Las Vegas
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
The Talented Mr. Rippley
Taxi Driver
ESOTSM

I have pretty shit taste, and worse diversity. So please comment below some of your favorites that are not the like super obvious Star Wars, LOTR, Pulp Fiction/Tarantino's entire catalogue, Godfather, Shawshank, and stuff like that

obligatory best scene in film. also best film in scene:

I think my problem with movies is explained by my taste in TV shows. I tend to be a big fan of character-based shows. Building characters is time consuming. Movies don't have time.

Finding movies that "move me deeply in one way or another" (Ebert's words) is rare for me. I'm a fan of Tarantino's stuff maybe because to me he uses the medium how it should be used: For short, "action"-packed stories with a focus on clever writing and humor over building believable and relatable characters. Because why waste time on that when the whole thing ends after 2 hours? Which is not to say that there aren't good "serious" movies, maybe my point is rather that if you're looking for something serious why would you limit yourself to something so short? It's no surprise therefore that LOTR and the Godfather (yeah, yeah I know I'm not supposed to mention these), which are both closer to a 1-season show than a movie, are also favorites of mine.

Writers and producers are also figuring out that cinema may not be the medium to tell a serious story with real characters, which explains the general decline in movie quality. Because what's the height of cinema in 2019? The fucking Irishman? The gazillionth generic mob story? Fuck outta here. Or is the height of modern cinema the Marvel franchise? Yeah, sounds about right.

That said, I'll put "Synecdoche, New York" on my watch list and highly recommend "2001: A space odyssey" since you apparently haven't seen that.

Im thriller movie fan so here is a part of what i would advise for this type : usual suspect, mystic river, prisoners, memento, silence of the lambs, memories of murder, shutter islands, zodiac ...
but the list would be too long, there is also the very famous like seven, fight club etc.. or all the south korean list (old boy, The Chaser etc..) that will make you forget parasite.

Once upon a time in america, silence of the lambs, shutter island, usual suspects, really good movies yeah

Since no one said them I'll have to nominate pulp fiction, apocalypse now, fight club, one flew over the cuckoo's nest, the departed, goodfellas, among others. The list is too long

I added Memories of Murder to my list. Have you watched Sleepers (1996)?

I'm not surprised. I saw the trailers and thought that they were trying to get way too much action out of WW1, when in reality it was a slog of slow and painful trench warfare. Thanks for letting me know
Yeah, I haven’t seen 1917 either, but it seems plenty of people didn’t like how the movie portrayed WW1. I saw this op-ed last month about it: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nytime ... 0p19G=3248.

Also, add Full Metal Jacket and Dr. Strangelove to the list.

I'm worried the cyclic nature of history and societal disposition will return us to the glorification of bloodshed.

I guess in a lot of ways we still exist in that.

I'm putting Lord of the Rings as my favorite film and you can't tell me what to do. Another film that I think is one of the best is Children of Men. Some others I like are Dazed and Confused, The Princess Bride, Conspiracy, The Class (Entre les murs), Infinitely Polar Bear, Ex Machina. Rogue One showed that Star Wars films can be good.
