Just watched the 1988 film "Midnight Run" since it had the same director as my favorite movie, Beverly Hills Cop. It was great

Disclosure (2020), a documentary about transgender portrayal in media and Hollywood. Not necessarily the "best" film, but certainly an insightful and important one. On Netflix.

Re: Official Best Movies Thread
The Count of Monte Cristo (2002) is a movie that really shouldn't be good on paper, but surprisingly is.
Guy Pearce performs probably his second-best role after Memento, Richard Harris is incredible (from Gladiator as the old emperor, and early Dumbledore), and there's even a young Henry Cavill in a supporting role.
Fight choreography is great, setpieces and location are amazing (most of the film was made on location in Malta, with real tall ships brought in). Main problems are probably with the accents of some of the actors, but it doesn't get in the way of the movie too much.

agreed, its a superb movie I have seen many times.
I like how Zatata becomes a pirate
and the big sets really make a movie feel grand
I am going to add in Ivanhoe BBC tv series, its like a multi-hour movie
and has many of the same qualities but tells the story of robin hood as a side story to a greater story in a way most never knew.
Re: Official Best Movies Thread
Watched glory yesterday. I don't know if this is the mark of a good film, but it holds the record for the film I've shed most tears over.

Re: Official Best Movies Thread
People often say shit like "this couldn't get made today" about anything with slightly offensive jokes, but I just watched the 1989 movie Black Rain where the protagonist is a NYC cop who doesn't play by the rules, then he goes to Japan and teaches a Japenese cop to do the same thing to be more effective.
