You don't have to seek personal interaction with individual performers for you to want to support them. You were entertained. You pay for the entertainment. It's that simple. I'm not seeking personal interaction when I "tip"/donate to people. When I donate/tip this site for entertainment, I'm not seeking personal interaction from the mods, players, community, whoever. I'm simply supporting in whatever way I can so that I can continue to be entertained.

To me this is more of an impersonal entertainment, even less - I wouldn't call it entertainment. It's just something I do so that I can return to doing something more productive or enjoyable. This is why I like to spend as little time doing it as possible because I feel like it is a waste of time.
As for supporting stuff like ESOC - that is much different to me. I know the people, I know the community and I want to see it grow and prosper.

The problem is that this system essentially relies on people to act against their own best interests. I can pay for thing x, but that means I won't be able to also have thing 'y'. Instead of paying for my favorite stuff, I can also consume it (often even legally) for free or for much less and then get some extra money for other fun stuff. The reality is that people already spend most of their money on entertainment. When you want people to pay for everything, they'll just have less entertainment. That's why people won't always buy everything full price.

I was working on a uni project (have to write a programm that solves a sudoku) and it just wasn't working for more difficult sudokus (more specifically, those with a unique solution). Then I made some changes trying to improve it, which broke the programm entirely. Then when I tried to undo those changes suddenly my programm was working and was even able to solve the more difficult ones.

I have no idea why it's working now but I'll take this win (and associated smile).
