Make sure a box of tissues is nearby
Re: Make sure a box of tissues is nearby
They found extremely large worms (near 23 centimetres long) in his intestines, showing the conditions in wich North Korean people live. Only he knows what he went through to make this near-suicidal attempt to escape, but they said he'll recover. I just hope this isn't the triggerer for an armed conflict.

I really hope the title wasn't meant to be insulting. That man was running for whatever is left of his life, which is indeed sad due to the sheer impossibility of his escape route of choice. The DMZ is usually guaranteed death for defectors

North Koreans are to blame. Romania lived through a similar dictatorship and we had to overthrow it by ourselves.
They just don't have the courage to revolt against the Kim family.

Well you can't free them by force.
They have to show a willingness to do so. The only legitimate political change can come from their own decision to change.
Nobody had to come to our country to liberate us from Communism. We had to go through a revolution to overthrow that shiet.

Fortunately North Korea has enlightened gun laws, just like Europe. No anti government militias or criminals. Only police and military have guns, just as it should be.

If they had guns they wouldn't be using them to revolt, many if not most of them like the regime

Saddam had 96% approval rating too.

And maybe Saddam should have been left in power, because Middle East countries can't into democracy anyway.

It's not guns that keeps the Kim family in power. A huge part of the population is involved in the military. If they really wanted to oust Kim, they could do it. But they're too enmeshed in the religious adoration of the Kim family to be able to shake off their mental chains.

Shut the fuck up
Re: Make sure a box of tissues is nearby
Why would I. I actually lived in a country that had a similar regime.

Experience? How about the evidence. Are you seriously attempting to say North Korean citizens are not victims of an immoral government?
Re: Make sure a box of tissues is nearby
Everybody wants to march on the streets. It's just nobody wants to be the first to do it, so it never happens. Romanians most likely had more freedom to organize, communicate and motivate each other, and possibly a belief that the military, or a foreign military, would protect them from being massacred. North Koreans have none of these things.

Of course not. That's not how a regime stays in power for decades. If you read a bit about how the political regime in North Korea works, it's no longer a question of ideology, they're not even building socialism or communism anymore, they took the damn official objective out of their party program.
Right now, the only objective of the North Korean state, according to their official doctrine (Juche) is to maintain the Kim family in power. They reject Marxism-Leninism and any other socialist ideology and claim they are building their own version of socialism. In this narrative, they consider North Koreans can only achieve self-reliance and fulfil their destiny by following a Great Leader. It's a religious cult, basically. It's gotten beyond the point of classical political ideology.
The power of the Kim family is only in their minds. Considering how big of a part of the population is involved in the military (biggest military force on the planet, since about 30% of their population is enrolled in it), the possibility of seeing the army defend the regime against the rest of the population is unrealistic.
Heck, it would be easier for them to topple the Kim family than it was for Romanians to remove the Ceausescu family from power, because their army couldn't really open fire on their own population. Too many family bonds across the divide. Whereas in Romania, a smaller % of the population was involved in the army, so it wasn't uncommon to see some soldiers shooting civilians during the revolution.

We had no freedom to organise or communicate. Everything was controlled by the Communist party and their intelligence service (Securitate). It was a totalitarian state. Phone lines were monitored, there was only one state TV station that broadcast only party-approved messages that typically fed the personality cult built around the Ceausescu family, lots of common people acted as informants for the intelligence service that made sure it spied and controlled the population. It was a society so grim and closed, that not even Kafka would have imagined.

You have to look at the culture of North Korea, they have a fear of an evil imperialistic United States (which, to be fair, is rooted in some reality) so it makes sense that they would accept their own bad government over something outside them. Also they're super racist so they think the Korean race is the best. Similar to many people on the forums here racism causes all sorts of problems
