I think gerrymandering is mostly done at the state level so the president has little to do with it. And, I know this sounds biased but from what I've read republicans have abused it to a larger extent maybe not historically but recently.martinspjuth wrote:@Goodspeed
If they can change so much in only two years US political system is even worse than I thought. The possibility to manipulate things this way doesn't seem new though, it seems this have been done regularly during the whole US history. Have most/many other elections had the same problem or does Trump abuse the system to a much larger degree than what has ever been done before?

For sure. Both parties have abused it, its just right now it's at a historic amount favoring R's.

@fightinfrenchman say:
Now that most of the results are counted, I would say its to late for bettings.
Results this far (and prolly the final results):
House: Dems 219 (+26) - Rebuplicans 193 (-26)
Senate Dems 45 (- 2) Republicans 51 (+ 2)
On the other hand, @fightinfrenchman could give us his sharp political analyzed of the results, and make this thread Great again (since his only responses on the last pages, has been to rant on how bad it is )
Im glad that Dems took back control of the House, but also sad that they lost many seats to the Senate. Im also very sad that Stacy Abrahs seem to have lost in Georgia. It is a fair guess that she prolly could have won, if it had not been for all the shenanigans by Brian Kemp.

It's great seeing all these Dutchies, Nords etc following American politics so closely. Just proof that the USA truly dominates the world.

Not quite true. Most people outside of the US follow US politics the same way as they follow WWF, it can be rather amusing even though they know it is fake.

yup exactly. in order to do something right, it's very important to know how not to do it. USA always provides invaluable examples for this.

It's hillarious to see how these mid-term elections in the USA tend to turn their presidents into lame duck ones. It's like they have it too good that they need to sabotage themselves.
Surely, mid-term elections should put more pressure on the current administration to perform better not only during electoral years, but at a steady rate.
Experience shows, though, that usually these mid-terms are lost by incumbents. So what we're going to see is yet another case of a lame duck president struggling to finish his mandate. Pretty much what happened to Obummer.
So, basically, there's no reason to cheer for either camp. It's just going to be 2 more years of gridlock politics.

Compared to the past 2 years, I would prefer a gridlock/lame duck now @Dolan .
I copied this from the Guardian just now:
One could say that the 4 candidates who lost, are so right leaning, that the result is about the same in the Senate.
I also think that these candidates have betrayed their base, one time to many - so when election day comes, the voters are just now willing to go out and vote for "the better of 2 evils".
I hope that this is something that the Corporate Dems will learn something from, but I would not hold my breath as long as Nancy Pelocy, Chuck Schumer and Tom Perez are in charge

Republicans have kept ā and strengthened ā their hold on the Senate. They have at least 51 seats, with a net gain of two over the Democrats. Four Democratic incumbents have been defeated: Bill Nelson in Florida, Heidi Heitkamp in North Dakota, Joe Donnelly in Indiana, and Claire McCaskill in Missouri.

Overall, the election results seem to be a modest success of the democrats. My thoughts:
- They won the house, which is not necessarily guaranteed given how polarized the country is and how ineffective/inconsistent the democratic election campaign seems to have been.
- They lost seats in the senate, which was to be expected. The senator cohort which was up for election consisted of a large number of democrats and it would have been quite a tough job to even defend all of these positions.
- No changes in quantity of governors.
