Yeah train prices were fucking ridiculous. And your ticket will always be checked because everything's run by a private company. With more than 2 or 3 people (maybe even just 2) I'm pretty sure it's cheaper to get a taxi even going inter-city.
Tube prices were okay but still easily like double you'd pay here.
Oddly enough, what i normally do to go into london is i get a ticket from where i'm at uni, which is reading so about 30 minutes out of london, that has a combined railcard for the day and it ends up being something like £11. The Underground isn't private if i recall correctly though only the overground, or normal trains. But yeah it's ridiculous, an example was when in Manchester for the Lan i bought tickets for everyone in our BNB for the same line, same train company but different time as i was slightly late to buy the tickets for the next train, even though the tickets were the same price and everything the conductor forced us to all buy £8 tickets for a 10 minute train journey.
