Do you believe in the death penalty?
Re: Do you believe in the death penalty?
“I think I might” does not sound all that convincing.
To answer your question - I do agree with it.

It's wrong, the state should not have the authority to take people's lives. What if a mistake is made? It can't be undone

I agree with the ear, death penalty shouldn't exist. Because killing someone doesn't solve anything. And because of how horrible the situation is if you make a mistake about the guilty of someone.

I dont believe in death penalty. For me, life is the most precious thing on earth and even if a murderer killed several people, you should not have the ability to take his life as punishment. In the end, the ultimate goal of jail should be the rehabilitation of the punished and trying to integrate him back into society.

Killing someone by death penalty is very expensive in the US. Shouldnt be too hard to find on google.

For some of the worse crimes, then yeah just get rid of people. Maybe do it a little liberally. I'm not sure. Like back in the Soviet days you'd get the guillotine for speaking up against the regime. But instead of killing off politically opposite people, why don't we instead kill murderers and rapists? There are some things that are so morally abject that maybe you just don't deserve to live. I don't know. What's a human life worth? All that much? Probably a lot. But in the event of murder, the value of life is lost already and there's no coming back. The life value of a murderer is hardly going to be equal to that of the victim. So just off him.
Also we could get rid of life sentences. Which is money saved.
Prisons could take on a role more geared towards rehabilitation instead of just straight up punishment. I don't think that prison is deserved for some crimes, but excessive fines or other such penalties are more appropriate. Of course that could mean that the rich could pay up for such crimes, so maybe not. I digress.
I'm talking about the death penalty.
In moral philosophy, there are 2 schools to solve problems :
- Deonthology (mostly represented by Kant) : There are some moral rules that you shouldn't break in whatever situration. Like killing someone, or liying to someone, etc.
- Consequentialism (mostly represented by Aristore if I recall correctly) : You got to chose what will bring more "pleasure" and goodness to the maximum of people.
In this case, it seems that you chose consequentialism, since you say that afterall it will be money saved for instance.

Maybe that’s where we differ.
I don’t think someone that has taken multiple lives has the ability to rehabilitate.
Would you feel comfortable with a convicted mass murderer living beside you or working in the next cubicle ?

Reminds me of that thread about spanking actually. Violence is just the lazy way to "solve" problems.

In cases where there is no doubt whatsoever, death is too easy. I would rather roast them over a fire over the course of weeks.

Well you could also imagine that the guy might change over the course of dozens of years of prison lol. There is no life sentence in france after all. And even if he gets a life sentence, it's not equal to being dead.
If he really cannot change, I guess it means the guy needs therapies and doctors rather than a prison.

In other words the death penalty would be applied only if it were absolutely certain that the person committed the crime in the first place.
You can't just ignore this, or you're assuming every justice system is perfect

I think life sentence is worse than death penalty because all they literally do is keep you alive.

I guess that differs from person to person
If you have kids for example you might want to see them grow up/ help them as far as it's possible.
give that guy a manual
Re: Do you believe in the death penalty?
I think no. In the US, the time between someone committing a crime and actually being killed is gonna be 10+ years. They aren't really even the same person at that point. Also, a rich person will literally never get the death penalty due to how our legal system works.

Re: Do you believe in the death penalty?
What give you the right to take someone elses life?
What example does it set if the state and legal system resort to taking somones life as a result of them taking somone elses?
In my opinion the argument for criminal punishments should be to prevent a dangerous person from bing free in society and the emphasis must be on idnentifying the underlying causes of crimes and rehabilitating those who commit them.
Remember that without the death penalty, killing somone is just murder.
