favorite bridge thread
everyone has a favorite bridge, and if you don't you should
Millau Bridge, France. Beautiful, elegant, simple, big.

Forth Railroad Bridge, Scotland. It's just like, cool, cantilevered.

Ponte Santa Trinita, Italy. Any old arch bridge is neat. Arch bridges need not be semi-circles, the ellipse is just as viable a shape but has more outward thrust on the abutments.

Dodge St. Pedestrian Bridge, US. A newly refurbished, sinusoidal pedestrian bridge over Omaha's most busy road. A bit of a local throwback for me, I've walked and ran over this sucker tons of times. It was slotted to be shut down but the people like it so much money was raised to refurbish it with it's original and distinct neon green paint.

Lancaster County is famous for its covered bridges, and this one was very close to my childhood home. I remember one time my dad was driving our shitty minivan across it, and there was a car coming across the other way. The van's transmission was fucked up and he couldn't go in reverse, so they played a weird game of chicken until the other car backed up and let him through.

Öresund Bridge, Sweden/Denmark. Makes it extremely easy to travel to Copenhagen with car or train, which is extremely useful because it has a big airport.

Re: favorite bridge thread
Short story time (this doesn't go anywhere so if you're looking for a good story go read a book). Where I went to school, seventh and eighth graders had shared classes, but for a few days towards the end of the year the eighth graders had to go take some exams. These exams don't really do much since everyone would go to the same high school anyway and you wouldn't get held back if you failed them. It would mostly just determine your placement in classes for high school but even then would be only a minor factor. Whatever, the eighth graders had to take them, the seventh graders didn't, but since the teachers weren't really interested in teaching lessons that only half of the class would hear, the rest of us just goofed around for a few days.
In my history class, the teacher organized a paper bridge-making competition. I don't remember the details of this competition outside of the fact that my team did pretty poorly. The idea here is that you're supposed to make your bridge "curve": that's the best way to make loads push towards the supports at the edges. That's quite challenging when all you have is printer-paper though. As part of this bridge-building unit we watched a documentary about bridge building. I only remember two things from this documentary: in China, you don't put soy sauce on things, and that there's some really nice pedestrian bridge in China that only needs supports at its two bases and is pretty long. Everyone in the documentary was very impressed by it. So, that's my favorite bridge, although I don't know what it looks like anymore.
I've got another bridge story from college that I'll post a little later.

The Lion's Gate Bridge (in my city). A 3-lane alternating traffic suspension bridge with 200ft of clearance built way back in 1938.

This is my favorite bridge. It's where I got a speeding ticket going 21 over.

I could have told the story about how I had to go to driving school cause I got caught speeding on the bridge and my adventures at driving school but I didn't cause this isn't a story telling thread. @Vinyanyérë is going off topic and you're enabling him!

That is indeed a very fascinating one. But I'd rather choose this picture cause it also shows the Drogden Tunnel, which makes it appear even more awesome imo.

Also this one looks pretty cool, only for pedestrians though:

You must include a funny or touching anecdote about your time with the bridge

I forgot to add an anecdote about my time at the Delaware Memorial Bridge. When Gustav, Ear and I were crossing it going to Wildwood, we were blissfully unaware of the events that were about to unfold.

My anecdote is that we crossed the bridge by accident and immediately had to turn around and cross it again.
