Merkel Quits

Post by Horsemen »

Nine years ago, a woman farm labourer from Pakistan's Christian minority went to fetch a jug of water from a well for the Muslim women working beside her in the fields. It was a hot day, so she took a sip before passing the water on to her neighbours.

The other labourers became angry that an unclean Christian had dared share their drinking vessel. They accused her of blasphemy, and demanded that she convert to Islam. When she refused, a mob accused her of insulting the Prophet Muhammad - an offence punishable by death in Pakistan. She was thrown into a windowless cell and has languished there ever since.

The following year, two politicians who had spoken out in the woman's defence were murdered by Islamic extremists. A new political party - Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan - was formed by the supporters of the murderers. The party has fielded massive demonstrations in all of Pakistan's major cities, and currently holds three seats in the Sindh Assembly. It demands that Sharia Law become established as the national law of Pakistan.

---

In 2015 German Chancellor Angela Merkel gave one million asylum-seekers free passage into Germany. Almost all the asylum-seekers were Muslim, and overwhelmingly more likely than 'moderate' Muslims to endorse the extremist views held by parties like Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan.

Just months after Merkel's historic decision, 1,200 German women were sexually harassed in open public during the country's New Year's celebrations. Although not all the suspects have been identified, it is understood that many were asylum-seekers from the Middle East and North Africa, and that almost all held extreme Islamic views.

---

Merkel has now stepped down as leader of the CDU, and signalled that her time as German Chancellor is coming to an end. What will her legacy be as Chancellor? How will the people of Germany and Europe remember her? Will it be for the uncontrolled migration of violent Islamic extremists into European borders? What does ESOC think?

It will depend on who you ask. Some will remember her as a strong woman and leader who stood up for human rights and helped those in need. Others will remember her as a person who let extreme Islamism spread in Germany and Europe.

A politician whose hesitant and super-prudent approach to decision-making could be easily mistaken for lack of vision.

A "po-mo" type of leader, one without leadershipdom, that does not impose their own will or vision on the political process, but rather delays decisions until the 25th hour, as if waiting for all the pieces to fall into place.

Someone who does not understand the current state of the world, I daresay. Or doesn't want to face the consequences of admitting that she does understand. She thinks Trump is an accident of history that will just pass. This is clearly shown in her attitude towards Trump and the way she clings to the old ways of "enlightened neoliberalism".

Her support for the big business is probably a form of guilt and repentance for her GDR past. Because I think she's most likely a left-winger at heart, albeit in conservative clothing.

I'm sure she would justify her decision to basically implant more than 1 million migrants from other cultures right in the heart of Europe in terms of future contingency planning and demographic sustainability of social security systems, even though that's an argument that doesn't hold water anymore. Just as having a country with more people does not guarantee increased wealth, I don't see how one could argue that a decreasing population leads to loss of wealth either. And multiculturalising your population doesn't seem to create more cohesive societies (eg, the USA). It might work on a small scale, like a city, a corporation, but when it comes to applying this recipe on the massive scale of countries and federations, we don't really have any successful example. Unless you want to believe that the secret to the Roman empire's success was its incorporation of populations from multiple cultures and geographies.

It's weird, because she built her career on prudence and piecemeal negotiations, but ended up making an uncharacteristically adventurous decision that is basically threatening to destroy the German political establishment right now. Parties that enjoyed popular support in the 30%s for decades and ruled together in coalitions are now sinking in polls, as if that adventure landed them in political quicksand.

She might share the fate of those leaders whose legacy was overshadowed by decisions that led to their downfall. Few people know that Bill Clinton was quite a shrewd politician who check-marked a few hefty achievements during his mandates (longest economic recovery on record, lowest unemployment rate, lowest crime rate, most significant effort to cut debt and spend less, etc), but that's history, you know, stuff that only concerns bookworms. For most bipeds, he was the guy who got his cigar tongued in the Oval office. A similar fate might await Merkel too, who might end up being remembered for dropping the punchbowl right when she was about to place it on the table.
