Have you ever wished you had a different religious belief?
Have you ever wished you had a different religious belief?
I've always been an atheist, and I even used to be a very militant anti-theist. Christianity has been appealing to me for some time now, however. I doubt I will ever become religious or even believe in God, but at this point in time I find the average Christian far more agreeable than the average atheist. This correlates with politics of course, but is nonetheless an interesting phenomenon. I am rather sure there is a large overrepresentation of atheist-to-Christian converts in my political sphere, so my experience is not actually very surprising. I am curious about whether this is more common than I imagine it to be in other groups.

Yes, the idea of some sort of universal cosmic justice is more appealing than the reality that good things happen to terrible people and vice versa

I like the catholic aesthetic, but it would be impossible for me to ever match any religion/denomination's dogma enough to fit in.

Yeah I have, because the word "Christian" associates me with certain people/ideas/institutions that I don't agree with.

Because it is great to believe in truth, presumably.

Because I am 100% sure that my God is the living God who created everything and provides me actively with his love

How do you claim to know for 100% sure?

Why do you need to be 100% sure?

You don't, but he claimed to be.

It's probably a halo effect from this return to nativism in politics. People who are its supporters tend to idealise past historical periods and associate political nativism with greater social order and cohesion, more stable family and social values, a sense of moral order and so on. And, by contrast, they associate everything modern with a lack of values, order, stability, and a missing sense of purpose. As someone said, people would still rather believe in something, even if illusory, rather than believe in nothing, even if it's true.

You are beginning to realize that the Christian God exists and that atheism is false.Gendarme wrote:I've always been an atheist, and I even used to be a very militant anti-theist. Christianity provides the only foundation for morality in the modern world. There is no consensus around a non-theist alternative that provides an effective guide on how to act, and on distinguishing right from wrong. A book was recently published exploring this theme - Seven Types if Atheism, written by an atheist philosopher. Your doubts about your atheist faith amount to your gut-feeling on a view that the book develops at greater length.
