So what about all the players who paid for this game? Isn't this a cheat?

You've never heard of a game going F2P before? :hmm:
This is very common... Buyers sometimes get a little acknowledgement or something, here they got Prime Matchmaking and a commemorative achievement afaik.

Considering many spent more on skins.... Not really much sense being cheated over f2p model.

I dont think theres anything unlawful about asking any amount of money for a product. Its a bit sad if you bought the game very recently though.

Let's take an example of two people A and B.

A spend some $ and purchased the game, a couple of weeks later B just downloaded it off steam because it was free to play. Don't you think A would feel cheated?

Whats 'cheated' about it. Person A bought a product for what he considered a fair prize. If he thinks it wasn't a good deal then he shouldn't have bought the product.

It's like complaining I bought potatoes last week but this week their price is slightly reduced as part of a sale.

It's hardly unfair. Valve is a private company and can sell their games for whatever prices they see fit. As long as you get the product you paid for, you have nothing to complain about. If someone else got a better deal because they chose to wait instead of buying the game at launch, too bad.

I sympathize a bit more with those who bought the game right before it went F2P, but someone was going to get burned no matter what. They just had bad luck.

I don't mean "unfair" = "illegal", there is a difference— the older players paid the price to get the game is because that was the best deal back then, so do the new ones, it's just that the new deal is better in every way.

Which is what happens in a capitalist system. It turns out the people that actually paid money for CSGO made a bad deal compared to what the product is actually worth.

By this logic, every time anything goes on sale it's being unfair to those who missed the sale. Are you expecting to get part of your money refunded once a game you bought goes on sale?

A valid point, but I think the point of sale is to decrease the price for a limited period of time to get more and more people to play the game, however, the "real" cost of the game is still the original one. Making it free to play means to decrease the price of it, this means that earlier the game costed too much as compared to its actual worth.

Exactly, so the people that bought that game then made a stupid purchase. The only thing that treated them unfairly was their brain, tricking them into thinking a bad deal was actually a good deal!

I disagree. Those who buy the game first dont pay the real price of the game. There isnt such a thing. They pay the price most people are willing to pay. And people are usually willing to pay more for a certain number of qualities, among which are novelty and exclusivity. You pay a premium because you are among the first, and usually more importantly the few. Even though making it free is not common, it's very common for games to drop in prices once their novelty wears off. This happens faster if they are shit games for example, because it turns out that the premium price doesn't match the price most people are willing to pay.

Is it unfair that I bought AoE3 for 10 euros, while others bought it for 50euros, but 4 years earlier? For buying it then, they got perks that i didnt get, such as activd developer support, more active community and bigger player base. It also has downsides, as now more often than before, i feel, games often release too early and have many bugs.

The csgo thing might seem like a new model, but its already used with books and intellectual property. Many books that were once expensive can now be found for free on the internet, as lack of a physical body and expiration of copyright means it can be reproduced and shared without cost. I love it. I hope games go that way too. Once the product has earned back its investment and made a profit, prices should be reduced to 0+production costs. Rather than being ressentimental about it, i think you ought to be proud youve helped others enjoy themselves who might otherwise not have been able to afford it.
