Re: 2020 US Elections
I disagree that going on Fox is what helped him do that though. Saying that he "recognized the value" of going on Fox makes basically no sense in a Democratic primary, even if it may help in a general election.

Re: 2020 US Elections
The point there was that it didn't have much of negative effect. Obviously dem primary voters don't watch Fox.
But what comes after a primary?

Re: 2020 US Elections
Not really sure how to quantify the negative effect of legitimizing Fox as a news organization

Re: 2020 US Elections
If anything, Buttigieg becoming a regular on Fox strengthens Trump supporters' conviction that Fox is not a conservative outlet, or not on Trump's side at all.
They see Fox as part of the mainstream media that try to push narratives that serve the establishment.

Re: 2020 US Elections
It's not that kind of people he's trying to reach. Creating a wedge between die-hard Trump supporters and Fox regulars who voted for the R next to Trump's name can only be a good thing.Dolan wrote:If anything, Buttigieg becoming a regular on Fox strengthens Trump supporters' conviction that Fox is not a conservative outlet, or not on Trump's side at all.

Re: 2020 US Elections
People legitimize Fox by watching it. Pretending it doesn't exist is the surest way to never win anyone over. It doesn't actually matter that reasonable people don't consider Fox a legitimate news org. That's not going to stop any Fox viewers from watching it. What matters is that potential voters are watching, and you know that they're being fed lies all day, and you can plant some seeds in there. All the better if it goes viral. That kind of exposure is valuable no matter how you look at it.fightinfrenchman wrote:Not really sure how to quantify the negative effect of legitimizing Fox as a news organization
Re: 2020 US Elections
Such a drastic difference in the media coverage and their method of doing media as a whole in the US
Re: 2020 US Elections
Part of the US polarization is obviously that the other side can never be correct on anything. This is also true for the media used by the two sides. You will find as many republicans who call NYT fakenews as you find democrats who say the same about Fox News. It does not really have to do with facts. It is purely about whose team you are in.Goodspeed wrote:People legitimize Fox by watching it. Pretending it doesn't exist is the surest way to never win anyone over. As for most things that happen, there are already examples where this kind of polarization and conformism can lead to. A nice one is from the early Byzantine Empire: the Nika Riots. At least there is something good about it. If you burn your Hagia Sophia down due to polarization, you may rebuild it stronger and more beautiful to last over a thousand years.

There is not a right-left equivalence between Fox and NYTduckzilla wrote:Part of the US polarization is obviously that the other side can never be correct on anything. Re: 2020 US Elections
@fightinfrenchman Will life have any meaning after US elections? Or is it going to be reptile.
Re: 2020 US Elections
I would argue that there's a grey-zone in terms of the average conservatives' attitude towards fox news. There seems to be an understanding that it's preferable to the other news channels, but they're clearly just trying to fill a business niche for "conservative news" and aren't actually on anyone's side. They lost a lot of respect with conservatives when they didn't support Trump until late in 2016, wrote an amicus brief for Acosta, participated in that weird alternate reality "we don't know who the whistleblower is" game that everyone was doing earlier this year, and even now they're mad about Wallace moderating the debate, and about Gingrich getting told not to mention Soros. If someone really trusts fox, they're probably just a boomer with a casual approach to politics.
Tucker is b&r though. He's the only person on, not just fox, but any channel that I can watch without cringing.

The Trump administration will be doing a lot of that.

The initial tweet thread is a good summary of the situation at hand, and the lower tweet a good follow up on it.
“To love the journey is to accept no such end. I have found, through painful experience, that the most important step a person can take is always the next one.”
