Honestly US-American party "membership" is probably the most useless thing. American parties are weird in general though.

It's literally not at all because at least in PA you have to be a member of one of the parties to vote in their primaries

Of course it has some benefits. In general american style parties are far less dependent on their members and their borders are much more open to their external environment than euro-style parties. And even in those many scholars have claimed a progressive decline in the importance of membership.
