Album of the Day

Post by Cometk »

recommend me an album here

today will begin something of a challenge in which i listen to an album that is new to me every single day for the month of february and write something about what i listened to. obviously today isn't february but i am a man of action and thus felt the need to immediately begin upon becoming aware of the challenge's parameters. fuck off

january 30th's listen is actually an EP recommended to me by (the, illustrious) @BrookG - the Yellow Ochre EP, by Vels Trio. apparently this is the british 3-man-group's first release, dating back from september of 2017. novel

first track is titular Yellow Ochre pt.1, a gliding jazz display between the lads that operates as a short, sweet, and humble opener. i will have to emphasize the shortness of this track because to me it feels like it ends too abruptly, a quaint bit of a spoiled O if i do say so meself. i had really wished this one would go on longer, or at least been more ambitious as my first exposure to the group. nonetheless it's a sweet track, if not saccharine

second track 40 Point opens with an inquisitive yet cool tone, with some delightful staccato keyboard-playing bridging the song into its second half, which is tail-ended with a feature from saxophonist and Sons of Kemet-frontman Shabaka Hutchings. if you don't know Sons of Kemet, they put out the best album of last year (in my own exalted opinion) so wake the fuck up. shabaka plays the sax on this track i believe (could be the bass clarinet?), and it actually took a second listen for me to fully appreciate it - his contribution is interspersed throughout the track and has some double tracking in the beginning to impact both audio channels (or maybe the surround is just that fucking nice.)

third track leads with some twilight zone-esque bell fijangling and holy shit the bit at 1m20s has me vibing - wish this part could've been extended, or led more directly into something more explosive, but regardless the composition of this track is so engaging, constantly teetering and tottering between patterns. a sublime experience - nice melodies to end, but i don't think they did the best job with the actual summation of the track. something to be worked on, as i also felt this in slight with the prior two tracks too

Godzilla, the fourth track, begins with a thick bassline and moody keyboardry, and a coyly optimistic melody. phasers and a tone uptick round out this track, and i think that so far this is their song with the most conclusive, and satisfying ending.

Yellow Ochre pt. 2 is the fifth and final track, and the longest one too. which makes me hopeful for probably their most ambitious effort. and titular pt. 2 seems to make good on this assumption, dancing between emotions and leading up to an enchanting drumline around the 3m40s mark (i'm a fucking sucker for progressions). spacey key tones and a buoyant lead melody make for an amicable finish to this EP.

Yellow Ochre EP by Vels Trio - a pretty dang good out of 10

listen

i'll say so far that writing this all out has given me a better appreciation for the music. see you all tomorrow

streams: of consciousness
Agent Fresco: Destrier
data engineer: @Vinyanyérë
Taunt: 11

Track 1 - Let Them See Us
errant, heavy nice buildup. then they go pop on me? should've gone grittier
half the track already gone by now
cute vocals but too poppy. wow
wet fart
really elegant chords to end the track and transition into the next one though1! hype

Track 2 - Dark Water
wow don't like these vocals. i'm not emo enough for this
mixing is too clean
a nice bridge but ended up being too short lol
cant fux wit these vocals
the track understays its nice guitar riffs
guess they're a rock band but wish they had gone metal

Track 3 - Pyre
it's got a nostalgic backing melody
but everything else rings a bit trite. i could normally still enjoy something like this if i were more engaged with the vocalist
singer is certainly talented don't get me wrong just not my steez

Track 4 - Destrier
titular track let's go
i'm uncompelled
what the fuck is this distortion? neither sounds experimental nor good
lol

Track 5 - Wait for Me
cool drums. now make something with them
ooh NICE PIANO KEYS THAT LEAD INTO A SOFT LITTLE BIT THAT IS A COMPLETE REVERSAL OF THE FIRST 30 SECONDS OF THE TRACK. THAT MAKES SENSE RIGHT. FUCK MY ASS RIGHT
just squandered
it's 1m20s now and i'm enjoying it a little bit tbh
ok decent
this is pretty cool
at least it has something to it
performance could be a bit tighter
decent

Track 6 - Howls
dudududu, dululululu
dudududu, dulululu
dudududululududududululu
dundundudn rrr dundundundun rrrr
~ I've escaped ♪
♫ Sundering the face of cadence ~
♪ Impatient ♪
~ to find the place where I was found ♫

ok this is a bop

Track 7 - The Autumn Red
first 18 seconds of the track show that the band has some ideas of what to do with fun, experimental sounds
then every second after that is just pop rock and i want to staple my dick to the floor
k it does lead into something less poppy but still quite trite and a case of wasted potential. fuck it maybe there wasn't potential in the first place and i'm just too optimistic. sad
i'm only halfway done with this album what the fuck

Track 8 - Citadel
fun underwater guitar tunes
gutter guitar is what they should call it. that aint hatin
at least the lead's vocalist singing feels like it matches the sound of the music
THAT WAS AN INTERLUDE ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME

Track 9 - See Hell
ok dude what are you gonna do now
again, the vocalist's singing feels like it matches the sound of what the band is playing. its fitting
decent, cool vocal chops and all. not my best style, but i respect it

Track 10 - Let Fall the Curtain
weirdly timed bass blasts that aren't conducive to the song's progression
there wasn't even a progression
i should've read the track name before typing that lol

Track 11 - Bemoan
candy piano playing
decent actually
not interested in hearing it again but decent
one of the better tracks

Track 12 - Angst
woo energy! cool. let's have fun
oh, it's another interlude
lol at least it was fun while it lasted

Track 13 - Death Rattle
they should've mixed up the sub-bass so i wouldn't have to listen to the vocalist. previous track was called angst, man what could i have really expected

Track 14 - Mono No Aware
mono no aware is also the name of an electronic compilation album from 2017. it wasn't very good, and neither is this song. more formless non-progressions that could be something okay if the band actually knew how to write. there are some decent sounds don't get me wrong but for a minimally satisfying payoff. now beam me up scotty

listen

standout tracks: Wait for Me, Howls, Citadel, See Hell, Pyre, The Autumn Red

I didn't realize you were going to listen to the whole album

It's a pretty good album I think although I've found the vocalist to be polarizing (i like him).

Oh now I see the challenge earlier in the page that makes a lot more sense

13 songs. 46 minutes. @fightinfrenchman. @ninanesbitt.

the sun will come up, the seasons will change.

first: i think her name is pretty erotic. also the cover art makes me a bit horny. now onto the review

Track 1 - Sacred
glittery, horny
fuck this piano (don't like it)
meh
standard electro pop fare in 2018

Track 2 - The Moments I'm Missing
really needs to improve on her imagery. her mode of telling me a story has hardly any abstraction to it at all. make my brain do some work please
And I had a friend, her name was Fern and she had a blue bike
So we'd ride through the streets
And I would sleep over on Saturday nights
Then I went to school, my family moved to a village nearby
At 13 years old, I started drawing black under my eyes
’Cause I met a boy, first time I kissed him, well, it was the last
'Cause I got afraid when everyone there started moving too fast

/////
barebones instrumental, absolutely nothing interesting to it

Track 3 - The Best You Had
ctrl c ctrl v the above

Track 4 - Colder
apparently this album was produced in part by the same guy who did engineering for adele's album 21. okay
this song has the turtle shell of having a better flow than the previous 3. which makes it bearable. but still hackneyed
WHOA LOL somebody fucked up the track continuity at 2m11s. nice job adele guy
actually that same audio bug goes on multiple times throughout the chorus. lol

Track 5 - Loyal to Me
acoustic track woohoo. but alas, a played-out melody
shoot myself
i don't mind the dollar tree trap kit that much because the song construction is a little reminiscent of a quality early 2000s pop joint. don't mind this one that much

Track 6 - Somebody Special
these are the safest, most uninspired instrumentals i've heard so far in 2019. you wouldn't even hear this stuff on the radio it's so banal

Track 7 - Is It Really Me You're Missing
at least i can still look at the cover art. that's some sort of solace
ok this shoe-horned bird call sound holy fuck i've gotta dip on this one.

Track 8 - Love Letter
cool guitar. like i mentioned on Loyal to Me, it's early 2000s dance-pop revivalism, but with a cheap contemporary trap palette. i am unlikely to choose this over something a like a rina sawayama track, but this is definitely a fun alley to be explored. just please take more risks, and show me your adventurous side.
regardless, this is the best track on the album so far. nice

Track 9 - Empire
nina does the same flow on every song. if she's gonna sing the same way every time, could she at least put some more effort into writing the lyrics, please? i've had this complaint since track 2
wish they distorted the bass. maybe that could've lent towards a more tasteful way of approaching the subject matter of the lyrics, like it were something paranoid or feverishly deluded. ugh fuck whatever

Track 10 - Chloe
yawned a few times but this song was alright
yeah i really don't mind this one. actually a pretty captivating song that i interpret as a being ballad to her (hypothetical, unborn?) daughter?

Track 11 - Things I Say When You Sleep
kind of getting the impression that nina is a halsey clone, and the more i think about it the harder it is to shake the thought. yegh
these lyrics are corn to the max

Track 12 - Last December
a more tender singer/songwriter tune. not bad and certainly one i could see some folks getting sentimental about

Track 13 - The Sun Will Come Up, The Seasons Will Change
i'm pretty tired from the rest of this album so i'll think about this one later

listen

standout tracks: Love Letter, Chloe

Ooops i put the link to the album into the review column.

What I'd like to know is: Are you singing/playing any kind of instrument? Which kind of music do you usually listen to?

ubiquitous punk rock/alt rock outfit. @Mr_Bramboy's teenage angst personified. rise against. wolves.

Track 1 - Wolves
return to form
electrifying. never underestimate the galvanizing power of a well-written pop/alt rock song.
i'm not the biggest rise against aficionado so i consider this track a best foot forward

Track 2 - House on Fire
a sweeter tune, one that i could see more lyric-driven listeners appreciating

Track 3 - Violence
to my limited knowledge, i know that rise against kind of has a sour history with their most recent releases. what i'm getting with wolves is a closer parallel to their original sound. while it isn't novel, it certainly isn't unwelcome.
this song isn't groundbreaking by any means but it's always nice to hear the style of music executed well.

Track 4 - Welcome to Breakdown
alright - the aforementioned sound is beginning to wear on me. i'm a bit tired of the tones - but - the band's performance is impassioned enough to keep my interest and enjoyment throughout the track.

Track 5 - Far From Perfect
we're getting poppier/more upbeat as we go down the tracklist haha. but like i mentioned in track 1, if the song is rousing, then mission accomplished. i can really welcome this progression - it's getting the exact emotional response it wants out of me (inspired).

Track 6 - Bullshit
ok this one's a bit corny haha.
toothless

Track 7 - Politics of Love
the energy of the songs is slowing down and i'm beginning to lose my focus with this album.
this song rings a bit hollow

Track 8 - Parts Per Million
thanks for dropping the cheesy love pretenses of the previous track - back to the action
cool double entendre meaning to the lyrics. you can tell tim usually puts more care into what he's singing about than what can be said for most of the genre

Track 9 - Mourning in Amerika
bleh

Track 10 - How Many Walls
obligatory trump song lol. at least it still has some heart to it
the guitarist gets to have some fun at the end

Track 11 - Miracle
fine but not as gripping as the first couple tracks

listen

standout tracks: Wolves, House on Fire

Wolves by Rise Against - unexpectedly decent out of 10

this is a pretty lazy form of review and i'll try to do something different for tomorrow's writing

see you tomorrow
